Problems with Teaching Licence/Visa/Understanding :/

Featured Replies

Hey everyone.

Just would like any help, information or even a little logic put into a problem I’m having at the movement.

The story so far goes..

I have started work at a new school. Everything is going well and documents are getting processed by staff that seem to have their heads screwed on.

Then we have problems...

After the head of English has gone to the Ministry of Education to get my Teaching Licence she was told I can’t get one.

When I asked her why, she replied by telling me I need to have my Transcript (I went to Leeds Uni, didn’t get my transcript as I was never asked for it and it

seemed a bit pointless)

Then after a lot of half Thai half English and Mmming and AAAing she wrote down Nottingham University on a piece of paper and said I should enroll on a course online... (I presume this is to get a Student Visa or something but I didn’t want to start down that road so I just kept quiet)

THEN it was said that if I work for an agency, they can process my Teaching Licence.

At this point I’m still confused how everyone else at the school doesn’t seem to have this problem, but I do.. (They have been there over a year.. I’m new)

I’ve never had this problem before and I’ve only ever had 1 other work permit. (You’re allowed 2 I believe?)

The next day an Agency comes in to speak to me. The conversation goes something like this...

Agency – So you do not have a degree?

Me – Yes I have a degree.

Agency – But you do not have your original?

Me – Yes I have my original copy.

Agency – And passport?

Me – Yes I have all my original documents.

Agency – And where are you from?

Me – England.

Agency – Oh... (Has the look of “Well what’s the problem?” on their faces)

Agency – When does your visa run out?

Me – This month.

Agency – Ok you need to do a visa run to Cambodia and get a 30 day pass.

Me – A tourist visa for 30 days?

Agency – No, a PASS for 30 days. Tourist visa is now only 15 days so you need a pass. Maybe 9000baht.

At this point communications broke down and I went home.

So what I ask you all mighty Thai Visa Forum people is.. what the hell is going on because I haven’t a clue.

I’ve never known it be this difficult to get a job, I have never needed a transcript, I have never heard of a PASS and I definitely have never paid 9k for a visa.

Cheers guys and I look forward to hearing back from you all.

Jamie.

Ministry usually want to see your original degree certificate.

No degree, no licence.

Get someone in the UK to DHL it to you.

Dunno what a "transcript" is, would assume they got the wrong word and mean "original degree certificate".

Well what to say I never had to show my original degree and diplomas, copies have always been fine.

Ask who at the school has processed the paperwork for the other foreign teachers and speak to them. Many schools promise to get you the docs for the non B and then do not, with rules changing regularly they really usually have no clue themselves.

I have worked at 5 or six schools. I give them a list of the docs they need to prepare both in Thai and English and for Non B, for Work Permit and for Teachers Waiver, then it is up to them and many do nothing.

Transcripts are the marks that you received in the list of subjects that you studied. I have never been asked for.

You do have a option if you cannot solve the problem there are other schools who have it together and will get everything done for you...

And maybe the school is doing everything (as an afterthought) and they know it is going to take some time so are asking you to get another 30 days while they do things.

I have ALL my original documents.. they have seen them and made copies and I have signed them.

A Transcript is a list of grades given in each class taken.

The ministry of education doesn't issue a teaching license, the Teachers Council does that.

For work at elementary or secondary schools you need a (waiver of) a teaching license. For the waiver you need a degree (including the transcript). Being a native speaker you don't need to do an English comprehension test.

For work at a language school for example no teachers license is needed.

Does this mean that for a Technical College a teacher's licence is not needed? I've been scouring this site and other teaching in Thailand websites but just couldn't find that information.

I remember seeing this somewhere regarding universities but does this also apply to Technical Colleges? If so, is there a link to the relevant legislation in either Thai, English or both?

If your time for the visa to finish is close you can just go over any of the borders and apply for a tourist visa and that will give you 60 days plus the chance in country to extend for 30 more. The fee is only 1,000 baht, so no idea why they would give you a figure of 9,000 baht. It sounds like they do not have a clue.

I am not sure about this. You could cal the techers council, foreign relations unit.

But I believe they indeed do not fall under the OBEC and thus not under the teaching license requirement.
