Campaign of dengue fever prevention begins on ASEAN DENGUE DAY on 15th June

BANGKOK, 12 June 2014 (NNT) The Director General of the Department of Disease Control (DDC), Dr. Sopon Mekthon said that the Thai dengue fever situation has been better in the period 1st January – 10th June 2014.

Even so a total of 8,231 dengue patients were treated with five later dying. The figure is 79% fewer compared to the same period last year. However, Thailand is entering the rainy season this July and expects to have 10,000 dengue patients nationwide. Therefore, there is an urgent need to destroy the cause of the disease which is the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.

June 15th is ASEAN Dengue Day, as established in 2010. Member countries have all been constantly arranging protection campaigns, resulting in fewer infections except in Malaysia and Singapore.

This year, DDC will start the campaign under the concept of “Big Cleaning Day” on ASEAN Dengue Day. DDC officers will spread out nationwide to offer guidance on how to eliminate the sources of Aedes Aegypti, for example by only storing household water in a closed container, cleaning up home properties and covering up any old tyres in the area.

NCPO asks Thai Ambassadors to monitor Thais abroad summoned by the junta

BANGKOK, 12 June 2014 (NNT) The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has asked Thai Ambassadors to prevent anti-coup activities, by monitoring people who have been summoned but live in foreign countries.

The deputy Army Spokesman Colonel Vinthai Suwaree said the head of the NCPO asked for cooperation from Thai Ambassadors to monitor such people who have been summoned but live abroad. The NCPO wants diplomats to monitor the movements of activists who are against the NCPO’s command.

However, the NCPO gave an assurance that the movements of these figures are irrelevant to penal law section 112, but do involve section 116: whoever makes an appearance before the public by words, writings or any other means which is not an act within the purpose of the Constitution or for expressing an honest opinion or criticism.

Chana Power Plant operates last day before temporary closure
By Digital Content

SONGKHLA, June 12 -- The Chana Power Plant in Thailand’s Southern province of Songkhla is operating normally on Thursday before its one-month maintenance closure begins on Friday.

Chana Power Plant operators and staff members are performing duties on the last day of its operation before it completely stops generating electricity from June 13-July 10 due to the disruption of the natural gas transmission system from the Malaysia-Thailand Joint Development Area (JDA) in the Gulf of Thailand.

Electrical power generated in the southern region is expected to drop by 710 megawatts to 1,600 megawatts per day during the closure, but the demand for electricity in the region is some 2,300-2,400 megawatts per day.

To ensure the security and sufficiency of power, the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) sought about 700-900 megawatts of electrical power supply from Central Thailand and asked various sectors to cooperate by using less electrical power during the maintenance period. NCPO downplays threat from overseas anti-coup movements
By Digital Content

1402566725365.jpg

BANGKOK, June 12 -- Thailand's National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has shrugged off anti-coup movements abroad, as well as rumoured activities of any exile organization.

NCPO deputy spokesman Col Winthai Suvaree expressed the Peace and Order Council stance as some persons overseas in defiance of orders to surrender reportedly will form an exile organization to oppose its actions and role.

They include Jakrapob Penkair, prime minister's office minister under the former Thaksin Shinawatra government.

Col Winthai said that the NCPO through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs continued to ask other countries not to support such movements.

Meanwhile, the Peace and Order Council believed that such movements would not have a significant impact and should be aimed only at seeking foreign allies. The NCPO would like other countries to focus more on situations in Thailand, Col Winthai said.

He also insisted that the NCPO was exercising martial law properly and mainly against those who violated security and computer laws. He denied the rumour that the NCPO was seeking those who insulted the royal institution.

The NCPO focused on convincing those people to cooperate, Col Winthai said.

Sek Wannamethee, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Thai embassy staff in each place would seek the whereabouts of persons whom the NCPO called in.

Ms Chatrawadee Amornpat, charged with lese majeste, had British nationality so that Thai authorities must use international law, not a Thai law, to bring her to prosecution. (MCOT online news)

Flight MH370 families get $50,000 in first payouts

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia Airlines' insurer has begun paying the families of passengers onboard Flight MH370 $50,000 each in initial compensation three months after the jet disappeared, a government official said Thursday.

So far six Malaysian and one Chinese family have received the advance payment, to which all the families of the 239 passengers and crew onboard are entitled, said Malaysian deputy foreign minister Hamzah Zainudin.

Talks with 40 more Chinese families are underway to ascertain they are the rightful claimants, said Hamzah, who heads a committee to support the missing passengers’ next-of-kin.

The Boeing 777 inexplicably disappeared on March 8 en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, with no sign of wreckage found despite an extensive search off western Australia.

Full payment to the families -- who can claim up to more than three times the amount of the initial payout -- would be made later, Hamzah said.
