Rumours Ed visas now only good from Universities?

Featured Replies

I've anecdotally heard from two people in two days that their embassies/consulates have warned them to only consider Thai courses from universities because ed visa applications from anyone else are likely to be denied or problematic.

Already, one friend who tried for ed visa in both Hanoi and Kuala Lumpur was turned away even though others from the same language school in Chiang Mai got theirs in Vientiane. Apparently the school was not on their 'list', and refused even though the school was able to fax a letter through showing their licence. School's been licensed for several years.

Anyone else got any news on this. Clamp downs have been warned for ages, but lots of the schools are doing things by the book.

The embassy in Kuala Lumpur has only done ED visas for university studies for some now. Nothing new there.

Not many people go to Hanoi for visas. So no reports for there.

Penang and Vientiane still do them for language schools without a problem.

If this is true and someone is in Chiang Mai and wants to study they could consider this course at Payap University

I can't see where they say they provide non-imm ED visas for studying Thai.

[honorary] Thai consulates from a western country are more likely to issue ed visa without any major issues, even multiple entry.

But regionally (neighbor SE Asia countries), I can see the restrictive measures being real. As UbonJoe has hinted, certain consulates issue certain types of visas more so than others.

Immigration Services For Students Of Payap University

Payap University will help all admitted students who are non-Thai citizens legally extend their visas to make the full length of study at Payap legal.

Required documents include:

  • original passport (Amarin will photocopy)
  • 4 color passport size (2 inch) photos of student in uniform
  • copy of tuition receipt (shows tuition and fees & courses) A4 size
  • copy of registration form (small rectangular sheet)
  • copy of your Payap application form

Thanks, any more heard anything about a clamp down, seems unlikely they will suddenly impose such a wide sweeping restriction on these many language schools teaching Thai, some are fly by night, some are for real.

Sounding naive here but if you're entitled to an ed visa with given paperwork then you should be able to get it at any embassy or consulate, but there again if they were totally consistent with applications there would be no need to thaivisa.com would they - maybe it's all a great conspiracy to keep our beloved TV in business - 555

There is no clamp down.

As I said KL stopped doing ED visas for language schools long ago (about about a year I think).

Hanoi was new but not surprising. As I said we do not get many reports for there. The one you heard about could of even been for other reasons.

Would there be any problem's getting a 2nd year ED - visa if your passport has already got 3 double entry Tourist visa's and 1 Ed visa all in concession?

If you get a new passport surely this would be a good idea? So it wont look so bad? Or is the system computerize like America?

You would not need a 2nd ED visa if you continued your studies you would just keep getting extensions of stay.

If you let your extensions lapse would be the only reason to get another one.

They normally don't take having tourists visas you had before into consideration when you apply for a ED visa.

Thank's for clearing that up ubonjoe thumbsup.gif Much appreciated smile.png

Not true about Penang embassy. Starting from this week they require 5 days per week/200 h total study program to obtain NON-ED. So people that have less than 5 days per week course in docs from school got only Tourist Visa.
