Thai prison troublemakers face 'supermax' unit

I'd like to know where inmates get 3 mil baht to buy a cell phone. For 95% of the population thats 30 years pay. The 5% of the population with that kind of money to spend never see the inside of a prison.

A clue .... they are CRIMINALS. The majority of the population are not!

I know one poster in this thread that spent a little time behind bars as a political prisoner courtesy the Nixon regime before the US Supreme Court (we had a real one back then) freed him. I do believe I can figure out the prison guard on here. SuperMax is a bad idea, while there are some really, really bad guys that have to be kept in something similar, there is no transparency about what goes on in them, too much room for abuse and nobody knows about it. Here is a prison guard incident, that while not directly related to Thai SuperMax I think accurately reflects the thinking of those working in the prison system anywhere. While fighting wildland fire in Calif. we were bused to the minimum security facility at Chino Men's Prison for chow. When we exited the bus for our orientation the guard finished with "Remember, the only reason you aren't in here is because we haven't caught you, yet." There was no humor there.

That wasn't much of a prison guard incident but I guess to a Level I inmate it must have been very traumatic. Today there really is a lot of transparency in state and federal prisons in America. The private prisons are another story. I'm sure the newly built Thai SuperMax prison will be a welcome relief to doing time in some of their older prisons.

I have to agree with the private prison part, but I don't think there is much transparency period. Private prisons should be outlawed. The minimum Chino Mens Prison did have a firefighting/cooking crew. The max lock up Chino was right next to us. Hey, hope you didn't think I was fighting fire as a Level one inmate, I had been out of jail for sometime. I told my boss I wanted out of there, screw the chow. Ah, I don't intimidate well. Working for USDA Forest Service, red-carded squad boss, tanker boss, crew boss trainee, until they found out my background. I tell you what, go spend a little time in that Thai SuperMax and then tell us how much you like it and what a great place for Thai prisoners it is. Still not saying the really bad guys don't need to be isolated from the general population, better ways to do it than SuperMax isolation etc.

This is the mindset of all paramilitary organizations.

Including police.

Us against them - no middle ground.

Sounds like the US Supermax Prison in Florence, Colorado. A former warden of this Supermax characterized it as a "clean version of hell". Actually, there are several Supermax prisons in the US, but the Florence, CO facility houses the most notorious offenders such as Theodore Kaczynski (aka the "Unabomber"), Terry Nichols of the Oklahoma Federal Building bombing fame, terrorists who bombed the Twin Towers in NYC in 1993 and other like convicts.

Then California has the Pelican Bay state prison way up in the northern part of the state. This place has a Special Housing Unit that is basically cages where guards are known to walk on top and spit, urinate and otherwise harass the inmates. Granted, those cons sent there are the worst of the worst of the CA state prison system, I'm not sure this and the Supermax system is accomplishing anything worthwhile.

The Security Housing Unit (SHU) at Pelican Bay State Prison, are concrete cells, not cages. At no time has an inmate in that prison been spit on, or urinated on by correctional staff. Where on earth did you get that from? OMG, lol.

Thailand is smart constructing Supermax prisons. These prisons are much safer for inmates and correctional staff than the older style prisons.

I read an article where former inmates of SHU as well as former guards stated as much takes place. Then there was a video clip showing the ceilings of SHU being bars, not a concrete ceiling.

Please attach the video or article you read showing a Pelican Bay Prison SHU cell with bars on the ceiling. There are no cells in that prison with bars over the ceiling cells, and correctional staff do not spit or urinate on inmates, lol. OMG!
