Piyasvasti opponents to protest at Army HQ today

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Groups of people concerned about energy issues will gather at the Army headquarters on Rajdamnoen Road this morning to protest against the junta's appointment of energy "guru" Piyasvasti Amranand to the board of PTT Plc.

The groups plan to wear black to express their opposition to Piyasvasti getting a post at the national oil and gas conglomerate, Lt Col Kamonphan Chiwaphansri, leader of the people's network for the protection of Thailand, said in a press conference yesterday.

She said they disagreed with Piyasvasti being a board member because he had supported privatising PTT in the past. He was Energy Minister during the junta-appointed government after the coup in 2006 when petroleum concessions were granted for as many as 30 fields, the most among other governments. Even the ousted Thaksin Shinawatra government only granted concessions for 19 fields.

Moreover, she said Piyasvasti was allegedly involved with "relaxing" the Petroleum Act on fuel concessions and a reduction in concession fees.

They could all find themselves doing long prison terms for not loving and agreeing with the Junta. People have been warned.

Go to the US Embassy that's ok.

They will be arrested just for wearing black. This is Thailand, land of smile, not land of protest. If anyone want to protest, please protest at a foreign embassy, like US, EU, etc.

The guy concerned has a track record , good on the people for protesting , wasting their time, shows they have some guts still in Thailand.

I support Piyasvasti.

There is no place for local Government interference in trans-national energy companies like PTT.

Seems that the coup has brought out the right wing ignorami.

Finite national assets like exploration tracts should be leveraged to bring the largest income to Thailand, so if the highest bidder is a rich foreign company - so be it. Apparently Lt Col Kamonphan thinks the concessions should have gone to a Thai company offering half the royalties.
