Problems with visa exemption at malaysia border crossing?

Featured Replies

Hey!

Me and my girlfriend arrived to thailand by air and got our 30 day visa exemption stamp witch is valid until the 9th of july (this is our first time visiting Thailand). We originally planned on staying in thailand for 30 days, but we liked it here so much that we wanted a couple of weeks more. At the time I was convinced that our best choice would be to do a border run at the Malaysian border (we are currently staying in koh phangan), so I booked us a visa run for 2x1500thb for the 9th of july. Only today did I hear about the developments with the visa exemption "crackdown" and this has really been bothering me. The lady at the visa run company did not mention anything about this. So has anyone actually had a problem with doing a 1 day border run in malaysia? What do you think? will we be allowed back into the country?

Also I am not convinced that our driver will help us at the border so I am also interested on what I should actually do at the border, will it be straight forward in and out?

Many thanks!

With only one entry by air you should not have a problem getting another exempt entry. You will only get 15 days unless you are from a G7 country.

See Joe's answer.

If you'd like to be on the safe side and could live with only 1 week more, you can also go an immigration office and extend the entry with 1 week.

Thanks for the reply! Unfortunately 1 week is not enough since we already booked a flight from bangkok.

Still hoping to hear from someone who has done a border run during the past months at Malaysia border. Anyone?

If you can show your ticket out of the country within 15 days of your new entry and are able to show 10,000 Baht per person (cash is best), then you should be fine.

Today I went to the travel agency from where I booked our border run and the lady said that we probably wont get a stamp at the border for the visa exemption afterall! She offered us a visa run to penang for "free" because we already paid her1500 thb.. This would not include the acommodation or trip back to thailand though. This has turned really frustrating. Could someone explain how the single entry tourist visa process works roughly? Is this a good idea? We havent booked anything yet, but we have to make decision today.. ughh..
