Document for proof of parent.

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Please see attached image, is this the right paper needed for proof of being a parent when applying for a non-O based on visiting a family member?

Thanks in advance.

That appears to be a Birth Certificate so assuming your name is on it, this may be the document you need. Perhaps you need others as well?

That's the problem, I'm not sure if I need anything else. My name is indeed on it.

With just your name on the birth certificate you can get a single entry non-o visa. Or a 60 day extension of stay at immigration to visit your child.

To get a multiple entry visa or a one year extension of stay you need to be the legal father of your child by way of marriage or legitimization.

Thanks Joe, I wasn't sure if I had to do the legitimization thing, I'll take care of that this week then.

You do need more than just the cert. to get a non 0 visa you need ....

You need the cert with yours and childs name on

A copy of both sides of cert.

You also need the family blue book

and a copy of the mother and babies pages in the blue book

Please the passport, copy of info. page

Copy of the mothers ThaI id card, both sides

Cam Khao,

Are you married to the mother?

My reason for asking is that I have just been through the legitimisation process for my two kids. I am NOT married to the mum and the ampur was not interested so it meant hiring a lawyer and formally going through the courts to be recognised, before going back to the ampur to jump through more hoops. It has taken me several months to get this done and finally got the documents confirming legitimsation for my kids about 3 days ago.

The good news is that if you are married it will probably be a much less painful experience. Best of luck with it :-)

Hi Steve,

No we are not married. Nothing untoward here, we have a medium term plan to build a better life, and the expense of a marriage (as I refuse to be a cheap Charlie over my one and only marriage in my life so it's likely to cost several hundred thousand Baht), comes bottom of the list of priorities.

Been together 8 years, my Son is almost 7.

So for visa purposes, legitimization is the way to go.

The way I read it, I should be able to rock up to the amphur, with my woman and my son, and get the paper done.

Hi Cam,

If you can wait until your son is 7 it would theoretically make life easier and 'should' indeed mean ''rocking up to the ampur''

My daughter is 6 and I have a 7 month old boy.

For my legitimisation as father of my kids, we were told to go to Amphur. As I said, here they were totally uninterested and told me that as my daughter was younger than 7 we had to go through the courts. (Had she been 7 i think they would have asked her who Daddy was and its all a lot easier)

This meant a lengthy interview for me in Thai with a translator (I could understand and even reply to many but not all of the questions in Thai), followed by my other half and our daughter being grilled. It was all stuff about how long we had known each other, how long living together, full names and DOB of kids, nothing surprising but pretty thorough. They asked several times if I was willing to accept responsibility for (the welfare of) my kids which was a bit strange as they have been living with me since birth and have Thai and British passports with my surname so this effectively changes nothing for us.

Even so, getting this all done cost me 15,000 Baht and the services of a lawyer specialising in this field. (We are in Phuket).

Take with you your passport, your lady's passport, kid's passport, kid's birth certificate, two copies of all of them and translations of anything that isn't in Thai. You will also want the tabian baan (house paper) where your lady is registered to and your kid will need to be registered in it also. I don't know what visa you're on. I am in a Non - B and had my work permit available to be scrutinised if they wanted it. I can't remember if I ever needed to produce it during the interviews but I was asked how much my salary was and about my job.

If I can think of anything else I'll let you know and feel free to ask me if you have any other questions I may be able to answer.

Best of luck!
