5 injured, 2 seriously as train strikes pick-up at East Pattaya Level Crossing

PATTAYA: -- Late on Tuesday Night an incident occurred at a Level Crossing in East Pattaya whereby a train struck a pick-up truck, causing injuries to 5 people in the vehicle with 2 of them currently in critical condition in Hospital.

The collision took place at the Nong Sadao Crossing and involved a train carrying empty LPG Canisters and a pick-up driven by Khun Sornchai aged 29. There is no warning lights or barriers at the crossing and as the driver of the Black Isuzu D-Max crossed over towards the Nongprue area, the vehicle was clipped by the train, operated by the PTT Company.

The train driver, Khun Surin aged 54 explained to Police Investigators that he was taking the empty canisters from Chachensao Province to the Gas Station in the Lompo area in Banglamung for refilling. The journey would then continue onwards to Kon Khaen Province in the North East of Thailand.

Can't understand why police investigators needed to question the train driver, it's not as though he swerved off the rails and ' clipped ' the pickup. Sad that people got injured, but I tend to look in both directions when crossing rail tracks.....

Cant understand how someone could not see the train coming----obviously did not bother to look. After all,the train is a big object, and it was very close just before the pick-up crossed. As it was late at night the train would have bright lights on and would have been easily visible. All blame must go to the pick-up driver. My condolences to the rest of the injured.Hope they recover soon

whilst there should be lights and barriers, if you are too dumb to look before you cross the railway lines, zero sympathy...

There is no warning lights or barriers at the crossing

On the media site they show a barrier (appears broken) and crossing lights in two of the photos. File photos of what should have been there?

Obviously the pick-up driver thought the train would yield for him, must have been clueless as to a trains stopping distance even at low speed.

With about 3 trains a day, guess he just tried his luck

Thais, just don't look. Hope they recover though and the driver learns a lesson. Wishfull thinking maybe .

There is no working warning lights or barriers at the crossing.

The aluminium arm of the barrier has been stolen for scrap value!!

Maybe the lights were off?

Unlikely...but possible and thats why an investigation is performed by police.

Cheers

You was at fault ?

Depends.... Did the pick-up have its hazard lights flashing? If so then the driver obviously had right of way. Rule of the road #23

Here is a quiz for everyone as a form of info dissemination.

Guess how many people have been killed in the last 6 years from colliding with a train whilst driving across the nearly 2000 designated rail crossings or the 500+ unofficial crossing points* ?

I've actually previously posted on this exact issue with the answer!

*a point where locals cross in order to save driving farther to the nearest designated crossing.
