hi is there any feedback on overstayers that have paid the 20k fine and gone to a nearby embassy and rectified there visa and returned ????

Pratsku, I have seen no problems reported by members. Pay the overstay fine, leave Thailand, go to a Thai consulate and get the correct visa, fly back to Thailand, get the correct type of extension of stay for your situation, and immigration will be happy. But do it soon, because immigration is pondering ideas about banning overstayers from returning to Thailand for a certain period depending on the length of overstay.

Have just came back from visa run to singapore due to my lawyer not sending my passport to immigraton around christmas, although i think it was closed christmas and new year.

He told me to leave and get a new visa before they change the rules.Paid the fine at airport after buying ticket,no problem leaving or coming back.

Pay ,be polite and make sure you have everything you need when applying for new visa!

A friend of mine recently. He needed a new passport, because his was too close to full - and, it didn't arrive in time for him to go somewhere else with it on time (he'd ordered the new one by mail). He eventually received his new passport, but by that time was on overstay - a couple months I think. So, he exited on his original passport, paid his fine. Then, he applied for a new visa somewhere else, in his new passport. I don't think he meant it as a 'scheme', it's just how it happened. And, I thought it was an interesting solution in his case, as far as starting fresh. It wouldn't work in the case of a blacklist, though.

On Monday I presented at Suvarnabhumi with 107 days overstay from a double entry tourist visa (didn't activate the 1st extension or 2nd entry) - thankfully the difficulties which put me in that position have been rectified now and I wanted to avoid the blacklist. Was taken to the overstay desk, paid my 20K, explained my previous difficulties and that that was now cleared up and that I was going to Savannakhet with the intention of getting a non-imm O and coming back to live legally in Thailand. All smiles and understanding - even a laugh when they said "see you next time" and I said "no way, the only people who see you are the ones who are on overstay, I will stay legal from now on"

Fast forward to Savannakhet on Tuesday morning 9am. 600 people trying to get visas in a torrential downpour, finally got to the window at about 12:30 - they kept it open until all applications had been lodged (good show guy, much appreciated) ... tried to bluff through a multi non-imm O based on age with insufficient support documents. Sympathetic smile, 5 hour wait and a double entry tourist visa later and I was off to the border.

Thai-Lao Friendship bridge, present my passport and Immigration officer 1 turns to Immigration officer 2 and begins a conversation so I excused myself and in my best, most polite Thai explained that I had applied for a non-imm O but the consulate had told me I needed more documents, so now I needed to go back to Thailand and organise more documents from overseas and from my embassy, I pointed out the overstay and I admitted that I was not seeking to be a tourist, I was trying to do everything legally to stay long term but I just hadn't got it all in order yet ... so all smiles all round once more and a standard 60 day permission to stay. Kra-pohm.

I think my story had a few elements of luck and goodwill and does not necessarily represent that one can overstay with impunity and reliably get back next day with merely a tourist visa, but at least one set of people involved were not being draconian in their application of the law.

in Thailand be calm and smile can help in some situations. If you get nervous and angry, you are burnt.

Cant say but am wondering about the 20 k overstay penalty since i just had my 90 day check in and the paper stapled inside by immigrations stated that overstays were subject to maximum of 5,000 baht penalty; maybe just a mistype on the form

was wondering .
