Hi to everyone,

from August 12th which qualification do teachers really need to get a work-permit and a visa ?

Bachelor/Master Degree or might a TOEIC-Certificaton be sufficient ?

Thanks. Peter

I believe a bachelor degree of any kind will get the you teaching license waiver and therefore visa and work permit.

Although i am not sure what you need to get the full teachers license. Weren't they talking about Bachelor of Education degrees? I'm not sure.

I don't think teaching certificates come into it at all.

Correct me if I'm wrong..

You'll need a TOEIC, as a non native English speaker, plus a degree in any field. Said degree has to be translated into Thai and certified.

Looks like wide-scale cheating in education is not purely a Thai thing:

"The TOEIC was one test used to apply for a visa to study in the UK. However a 2014 undercover investigation by the BBC program Panorama appeared to expose systematic cheating & fraud by an independent organization administering the TOEIC, which led to the Home Office suspending acceptance of all ETS English exams. Eventually, on 5th April 2014, ETS has decided not to renew its licence as a provider of a Secure English Language Test (SELT), which means that all its English language tests are no longer honoured for purposes of being issued a UK visa." In order to legally teach at a primary/secondary school, a Thai Teacher's Licence is required. Temporary Thai Teacher's licences can be issued by the Teachers Council of Thailand if applicants have a bachelor degree (In any field).

As a teacher's licence is required to teach at a school, Immigration usually set it as a requirement before extending your permission to stay based on employment.

As a teacher's licence is required to teach at a school, The Department of Labour usually set it as a requirement before issuing/extending a work permit.

Although each area office has it's own requirements, and some are less strict than others e.g. in my province, immigration are very strict in regards to the correct documents, but the DoL are relatively relaxed about documents (Immigration actually told us once, that they're strict regarding the teacher's licence, because they know the DoL sometimes doesn't require it before issuing WPs).

Although when teaching at a university or language school, a Thai Teacher's Licence isn't required. However universities usually require applicants to have bachelor/masters degrees in order to be hired. Language schools often simply encourage their teachers to work on tourist visas, rather than going through the rigours of employing them legally (Although this is just from what a few people I know have said, they might have simply been unlucky in their choice of employment).

I dont think 12/08 is relevent to WPs, licences etc, just you wont be allowed back to Thailand if you are border running albeit the two do seem to be connected
