True Wi-Fi service free at Siam Square

BANGKOK: -- True Corp Plc has carpeted 60 rai of the prime shopping area of Siam Square with a Wi-Fi public wireless Internet access network which customers of its cellular operator True Move can use free of charge once a day.

True president Supachai Chearavanont said the company had spent Bt10 million on the Wi-Fi Outdoor project.

True Move customers can connect with the service in the Siam Square area free of charge for three hours a day, he said.

True businesses include fixed telephone, cellular and wireless Internet services, and pay-TV.

The company will spend an additional Bt100 million by late this year to further expand its Wi-Fi network to cover the major provinces from 2,500 existing access points nationwide.

Customers of the True group can also buy a card to access Wi-Fi service at a cost of Bt90 per hour, versus the normal Bt150 per hour for non-group users.

Supachai said the True group expected to have between nine million and 10 million customers at the end of the year.

He said what True needed now to complement its business was the broadband wireless Internet technology Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, or WiMax.
