DSD joins two agencies to develop English skills for taxi drivers ahead of the AEC

BANGKOK, 22 July 2014 (NNT) -- Mr. Nakorn Silpa-archa, the Director General of the Department of Skills Development (DSD), said the DSD had combined efforts with FM 91 radio station to promote safety and assist traffic flow, and Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University (STOU) to organize an English Teaching Program for the taxi drivers.

The idea is to focus on the vocabulary and likely conversations when communicating with English speaking foreign visitors. The project is expected to start in August.

The Director General of the Department of Skills Development (DSD) said the DSD aimed to improve English language skills of taxi drivers so that they will be better prepared for the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) and at the same time be able to provide services for foreign tourists as well.

This will help them earn more income and it is another way to promote tourism in Thailand as it is believed that there will be more tourists from other countries visiting Thailand after the commencement of the ASEAN Economic Community.

They can't really be serious if they think they can teach someone a new language in just 16 weeks and where are they going to get the English teachers from? They have blocked a lot with a ban on border runs.

I Would say their English is adequate for the job.

Question, "can you use the meter?" Answer, "NO".

Question, "can you take me to anywhere further than a few blocks?" Answer, "NO CANNOT".

Question, "do you know where such and such is? (while pointing to it on a map)?" Answer (after examining the map, normally, up side down and even the back of the map) "No".

I really don't see the need for lessons at all.

I can't see how you can be denied a work permit.

How about teaching the immigration officers before the taxi drivers, they certainly need it. Would be wise for them learn then international language instead of complaining the tourist visa applicants that they don't understand Thai or the staff's pigeon English.

Most of these drivers are above thirty , just when are they going to stop making a living to learn English, maybe they will all be issued with a little red book and then we will get Loom instead of room, as I get at my place.

I like to see two agencies develop taxi driver skills for taxi drivers: AEC

What they need are spoken English skills ... and that can or could be done by TEFL teachers no need for perfect written English grammar or Med degrees just good spoken English skills to afford a better living and service.

Duh are we leaning yet ?... apparently not and wont be anytime soon...

be interesting to see how this would meet the work permit requirements. A work permit for one job does not carry over to another and

there are requirements for how much work is being done and getting paid.

Maybe just hire one of those millions of Thais that speak perfect English.

A good idea if it incorporates lessons in honesty, integrity and ethics. I was in Bangkok last night and one asked 300 Baht to take an elderly friend, with mobility issues, six blocks to his hotel! Needless to say, we passed on that one.
