Hi wondered if anyone can help, I am wanting to employ an au pair who is half Thai/ Japanese, she has passports for both, and currently au pairing in Italy, I know she can come to the uk on her japan passport for three months as a tourist. What I need to know is what sort of visa would be best for her as I want her to stay 9 months. My daughter is half Thai and her mother has returned to Thailand, hence the reason for looking for an au pair with a Thai background as I want my daughter to have some understanding of her other culture. Any advise would be appreciated.

She cannot qualify as a domestic servant as she has not been employed for a year with the sponsor.

She might qualify as an "au pair" if she holds a Japanese passport. Thai nationals cannot qualify

What kind of silly regulation is that, limiting Au Pair to certain nationalities (or does it exclude some nationalities)? South East asian countries are popular countries of origin, especially the Philliphines, so why ban on nationality? Shouldn't they simply see if one meets the general requirements and that the application is genuine?

Can you explain why a Thai can't qualify?

Thanks.

Basically, because there is no actual "au pair" category in the UK immigration rule anymore. Au pairs are now part of the "Youth Mobility" category, and this is from the guidance :

Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme

Since 2008 there has been no official au pair programme in the UK. However, you can travel to England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland under the Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme to work as an au pair if you are a:

  • citizen of Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Monaco, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea or Taiwan
  • British overseas citizen, British overseas territories citizen or a Britsh national (overseas).

In other words what used to be known as working holiday visas.
