60 day tourist visa at Nong Khai (Laos) (after multiple overstays !)

Featured Replies

Hi all !! Just thought I would let you know that I successfully obtained a 60 day tourist visa in Nong Kkai with a few previous overstays (but not this time) and visa runs in my passport. I ended up staying a week in Vientiane as I waited a few days before applying for the visa. No hassles at the Embassy or boarder, so everything is still ok in that part of the region. Thanks to Ubonjoe for the advice !! Now to prepare for a longer term proper visa...

Can you give me advice on the best way to do that? Like what flight company, what city/province that you fly into, what place to go apply for visa etc? Also how many baht for the new visa? I am on overstay and trying to plan trip to fix this asap. Thanks ahead of time to everyone who has info for me!

Edit: I see Nong Khai on map now

I had a couple of not so long overstays and a couple that were about 8 months. However, this time I was just on a 30 day visa on arrival that I received at Don Muang after clearing and paying the fine for the last overstay, so I was not overstaying at the time of obtaining this 60 day visa. As the current rules on overstaying might have changed since I cleared mine up (about 2 months ago), someone else might be able to advise you or take a look at the plethora posts concerning this topic.

In terms of obtaining a 60 day tourist visa at Nong Khai, I simply went to Laos by bus, applied at the embassy and went straight through Immigration at Nong Khai without any questions or proof of following air tickets etc. I am not sure how it would go with an overstay in this current climate, but I suggest you clear it up sooner than later before the penalties become any harsher. Also, if you plan on coming back, it might be an idea to at least spend a few days to a week before heading straight back to boarder, but this may also not be necessary at this time.

You can fly to Vientiane from Bangkok,. Lao Southern airways has the lowest fares.

The closest domestic airport is Udon Thani, You can get a van from there to the bridge in Nong Kai. Nok Air has a fly/ride service to Vientiane via Udon.

You can look at some reports for Vientiane here: Latest Reports Of Getting A Visa In The Region

Once more thank you Joe for providing such great advice.

I am going to immigration in Bangkok tomorrow to apply for an extension on my 60 day single entry tourist visa which was issued in Hong Kong and expires on Sunday.

I have already applied for an ED visa but I'm still waiting for the paperwork. Assuming I get the 30 day extension I hope that takes me to when the papers will be ready (it could but then again it might not, all depends how soon the MOE approve my application).

I will then fly to Vientiane to apply for my ED visa and then fly back to Bangkok.

Great news !
