It makes me wonder how farangs put up with their partners male "friends" hanging around all the time.

Another horrible story. I wonder if the murderer was actually her boyfriend or just fancied raping his friend after a few drinks. Thai males seem to thing raping their friends or girlfriends is acceptable behaviour and very few ever get reported. Raping your wife is specifically permitted in the rape law.

ฺิBlaming 'Western culture' is just as simplistic as blaming 'the Thai character' as some other people want to do.

Western culture per se is not a threat against Thailand. Thailand has been able to adjust and blend cultural traits of other nations/peoples for several centuries ever since its inception, and will keep doing so in the future. Thai culture, just like all cultures, is changing, some of it for the better and some of it for the worse. Urbanization, a world wide trend, makes for looser morals then in the traditional society where everyone was required to behave as a consequence of having a clearer role in a village community and as representatives of their families.

But all this is kind of beside the point in this tragic case, the real circumstances of which we all know very little about. We only have a statement from the girlfriend of the victim, filtered through a newspaper article to go by.

Anyhow, if we are to take the story at face value, it seems we ought to blame excessive drinking and the results of it (heated feelings, communication breakdown etc.). It very rarely creates something positive.

Gday Guys,

tell you what, not over a month ago I went to the Police Department to do my Visa. Of course I was a bit updressed for that, but not to much. After I went to my room Soi 3 and thought "Oh lets check my emails" ... so I went in that Internet Shop in front of the Japanese Embassy.

Checked emails, (was alone in that shop with the owner, staff ?!?!) then I went to pay. In that situation I had my document-bag under my right arm, the wallet in the left hand and picked the money out ... when the punch hit me right on my temples, my glasses flew and I thought whats going on ?!?!

Everything happend so fast but I had plenty of time for think (strange in sitations like that) and I saw this crazy thai mans face (white) comming towards me grabbing for scissors.

I stay here now 5 years, but never experienced a situation like that. I only thought darn if you fight here in his shop whatever .... and I went out of the shop as fast as possible (scaring for being stabbed in my back, because it was a sliding door) and jumped 3 to 5 meters away from the shop. Then nothing else happend and I went away. Lost my glasses because i didnt dare to go back.

I didnt tell anybody anything because what do I have to win hmmm ?

A farrang in situations like this is always lost. For the case you you slap him a bit around, or brake his bones they can tell the police everything they want .... you broke a Computer, you talked bad to them, you didnt want to pay, whatever no chance to proof for you. The other choice you have is being stabbed, but even then .... 'he told me that I..... , and I lost control", he grabbed for the money .... and so on..... they will go out without trouble .... nearly always.

Think I was very lucky, but i am really really fed up to listen about more and more attackts against farrangs.

It offends me a lot that some people here seemed to be unaware of the seriousness of the Situation

Bottom line, my point is try to behave yourselves out there so called "english teachers" or i am pretty sure that as long as the so called "english teacher" rate is increasing here, so will the murder rate.

Just use common sense and do not be over friendly to strangers - and be reasonably suspicious of others who are over-friendly to you, both other foreigners and Thais. Do not put yourself in a position where you become a threat to somebody else's business. Keep a low profile and try to educate yourself about the culture as much as you can. If you feel uneasy about a situation, person or place, trust your instincts and steer clear.

And keep a healthy distance to drugs, excessive drinking and dodgy people.

In most cases, violence against foreigners is provoked by failing to observe the above rules. In some cases, not. Thailand is still not very dangerous for Westerners with common sense and good intentions.

If you really do not have a good answer to why you are here, it is probably a very good idea to start contemplating a ticket out.

Though it is sad, because it looks like he was just protecting his girlfriend, this is still an exception. In the US or Europe you will hardly find any articles about murders anymore when it comes to foreigners, because it is too common. The fact that these cases are widely reported in the Thai press mean that they are extremely rare. So we are still much safer than elsewhere.
