Human remains still at MH17 crash site: Australia PM

SYDNEY - More that a week after Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 came down in rebel-held eastern Ukraine human remains are still at the crash site, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Saturday.

The majority of the 298 people killed when the plane was apparently shot down by a missile were Dutch, but there were also 28 Australian nationals and nine permanent residents onboard.

Abbott is sending 190 Australian Federal Police to the Netherlands, along with a small number of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel, to participate in a planned Dutch-led operation to secure the crash site.

"Yesterday Australian officials again had access to the sites," Abbott said.

"Plainly there are unrecovered body remains in the area. And it’s the presence of unrecovered remains that makes it more important than ever that an international team be dispatched to the site."

Questioned on concerns about sending troops into the volatile situation in Ukraine, Abbott stressed that Australia’s involvement in the planned mission was only to secure the remains and help the investigation.

"It is, I stress, a humanitarian mission. Others can get involved if they wish in the politics of eastern Europe, our sole concern is to claim our dead and to bring them home," he said.

"When you’ve got major humanitarian effort, as we have, it’s normal and natural to have ADF assistance and many countries have got their defence personnel on the ground already," he added, saying this included Dutch and Malaysian military personnel.

Abbott said every day the crash site remained unsecured, there was more risk of interference and that bodies would deteriorate due to their exposure to the elements.

190 Federal police to secure the site and look for remains!!!!!! That's sound like a great investment of taxpayers money. What are they going to do?

wow, surely a team of say 10 people is all that would be needed to claim the remains and take them home. I feel sorry for the families of those who were lost and agree that a team needs to be sent to aid in recovery. But 190, that is just a little overboard, and typical of Australia to waste money like that.

I would say the crash site needs to be secured and 10 people won't cut it. I seriously doubt if 190 will but it is far better than 10.

Here is an example of who they will be going up against:

MH17 victim’s credit cards used after crash, says report
The wife of a Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 victim was stunned when she saw that her husband's credit cards were being used after the plane crashed in Ukraine last week, the Daily Mail reported.
Cameron Dalziel's wife Reine has since cancelled her husband's credit cards upon noticing activity in his account, her brother told CNN. Cameron was a South African travelling on a British passport, who had moved with his wife and two children to Malaysia recently.
The report said that the "heartless" rebels, who allegedly shot the plane down, had been using victims' credit cards, answering their phones and looting their belongings, including jewellery, from the crash site.

Gather information on things in general, that might be of interest to others in the world.

I am sure there are other teams that are already in place and so I see no reason to send 190 more. Some is good but 190 is overkill.

aussie and dutch soldiers about to be deployed to the ukraine . here comes WW3

THE END IS NEAR . . . the end is near . . .

Are these guys paid salaries? I dunno, with all the real waste in the world this might not be such a bad idea and might keep them from becoming a political prisoner. If they sent 10 who then got shot or kidnapped, we would then have am outcry as to what were they thinking. Lots of arm chair QBs in this world that complain either way.

Did you lose a loved one on this flight?,,, IF so,, I'm quite sure,, after THIS many days of them laying there, ROTTING ,,, you'd be posting,,, "ONLY 190?!?!,,, WHY SO FEW!".... If YOU had a loved one on the ground there,,, HOW many searchers is appropriate????? have a modicum of respect,, But I'm aware,, for the, TYPICAL TVF,,, "keyboard warrior",, that's nearly IMPOSSIBLE!....

Sorry to inform you of this mate. But if I lost all my family on this flight I would feel the same. It is just illogical and will accomplish nothing in regards to repairing the loss for anybody.

So you're saying,, if your ENTIRE FAMILY, was lying in the open elements, rotting in the sun,,, sending, "too many" searchers would be a huge waste of tax dollars?...... WOW!!!....

Yes. The body is not the person it is only a vehicle. I don't give a s##t what happens to my body after I die. Finding bits and peices may appease the materialistic believers of the world but it would not help me if I was in that field. If my body came back missing an arm what big difference would it make? DEAD IS DEAD. And realistically how many people does it take to do a search. I reckon 1 or 2 cadaver dogs would find all the bits in 2 or 3 days.

The body may only be a vehicle, but much of how we judge a society is on how they treat the dead.

For the families, those bodies are the symbol of the life someone had and that was tragically and prematurely taken away. It is important for them to provide some modicum of protection and respect for the remains of the deceased. It's really all they have left.

Maybe your view, but perhaps not necessarily to impose your view on the rest of the families at issue. Chances are these dudes are going to be paid for sitting around doing not much anyway so I doubt the financial impact will be felt by the country.

Almost 300 people got killed by stupidity of the Russians, and previous posters are moaning about Australia is spending tax money to get the remaining bodies back to their home countries!!!!

SHAME on you!!! I bet you are Australians who have NOT lost family or friends in this disaster......

I seriously would like to know what you think if it was YOUR family they are going to look for.... Besides that, I doubt it is YOUR tax money they are spending! You obviously do not know what you are talking about sad.png

Ignorance is Bliss, but stupidity and no compassion should be sins...

Yes, I am Dutch and I hope they spend all that is needed for this mission!

I, for one, hope that nobody tries to recover YOUR remains when you die...

Why has it taken this long for the Malaysian, Aussies or Dutch to do anything? Why didn't they send in a force immediately? Why didn't the Americans save the day?

I cannot believe what some of you posters are on about. Bitching about how many people are being sent by Australia to assist in the recovery. You know who you are so I will not give you oxygen by listing your name in my response. First off, are you Australian and do you pay tax. If not wake up and keep your despicable responses to yourselves and do not insult the memories of the families of those lost. Before you go on another rant, I am an Australian, proud of it and paid taxes until I retired here in Thailand. I have no objection whatsoever to how many people our Prime Minister is sending. He is proving to be a very compassionate person and a true statesmen. In addition, do not forget that what is happening is being planned by a special force of military and civilian personnel, none of whom are idiots and have far more expertise then you. Also, they are waiting on approval from the Ukraine Government for the personnel to be allowed to enter the area. Further, your knowledge of the situation appears very limited as this operation falls under the auspices of the Dutch Government and has received unanimous approval of the UN, including Russia.

Secondly, have you ever been involved in search and rescue and the securing of a crime scene. And don't forget this scene covers an area of some 50 odd kilometres. Well I have been and being in law enforcement for over 30 years and responding to crime scenes and the securing of them I have some idea of what is required. There are many fields of specialists that are required and being in a war zone security is the utmost importance. It is abundantly clear that you are ignorant of what is required in securing a scene in a hostile area and what is required to protect investigators whilst they search for evidence to hopefully, prosecute those involved in what could be classified as a war crime.

We have already seen personal effects being stolen and bodies being moved so the personnel being sent, in my opinion, is justified. Or heaven forbid, do you people condone the initial atrocity and those being perpetrated after the event. Show respect for the families and the dead and if you feel that your body is only a vehicle then all I can say that from your writings you should seek some repairs to it so at least you can become a thoughtful and civilised human being.

I joined the forum to keep abreast of what is happening here in Thailand and around the world and I have read many posts that are clear, concise and well written as they contain facts, not moronic statements like a couple of you have posted. If you cannot say anything constructive backed by facts, not guesses, assumptions or hearsay then I suggest you do not post offensive and distasteful remarks on this or any other forum.

In conclusion all I can say is that you must have a lonely and poor quality lifestyle as what you have written only highlights the flaws in your character and lack of knowledge of the subject you elect to comment on. If you cannot articulate your comments then don't post garbage.
