Yep there is a another big traffic "crackdown" going on. Unfortunately the things they chose to enforce will have zero effect on safety, and will only perhaps improve some of the traffic jam problems in the city. Everywhere else it's moot. All they need to do if they want to reduce the death toll here is start writing speeding tickets to actual speeders, not just this fish in a bucket lets just pull everyone over at a road block and site them for whatever approach they have now. Nope, that's too simple, and to difficult for the officers. Let's get people that stop over the limit line, que jump, and fake license plates. TIT.

You would like to be hit by a driver with no insurance or driving license, or even your car hit, if you have one.

Having insurance or a drivers license has no relation to whether or not you are likely to cause an accident kill or maim someone in Thailand. And the only insurance required by law is not of much use. It's for Thai's that have nothing. You or I would not have much use for it.

In Thailand the police only arrest you for drunk driving if they are operating a checkpoint specifically to catch drunk drivers.

Think outside the box, this is Thailand... do you really want to kill somebody in Thailand in a road accident with not a full cover of insurance? Or at least bail payment guarantee?

It's very simple if you kill somebody in Thai traffic you get arrested, and you need to wait until the Thai juristic system has time you look at your case... That mean, that even you're innocent you can be in jail for months if you not able to pay the bail.

So maybe insurance is not needed by law... it's required if you ride a motorcycle in Thailand on a daily base... better safe than sorry I would say...

The current Thai rulers have set a path to ban all sorts of corruption. Corruption with vehicle registration is something the current military government takes serious, it one of the biggest and most profitable corruptions in Thailand. People riding illegal vehicles should understand that Thailand is still under Martial Law.

You rider an illegal vehicle in Thailand you get arrested and hold until you reveal who helped you with the registration of the vehicle... (not my words, but my simple translation)

Heh heh, they're pretending to 'get tough' about corruption. Part of the show.

Its interesting - to the Asian mind, this sort of government is more 'lawful' or 'clean', but to the Western mind, it is absolutely lawless by definition.

You are wrong there.

I ended up in hospital because of a crash and the "Compulsory Motorbike Insurance" (Thai: Por Ror Bor) paid for everything.

It's about time they had a crackdown on vehicles with smoky exhaust, all over Thailand. The air quality suffers greatly because of the miscreants that wont maintain there vehicles.

Yes I agree.. but people will cry faul that it only affects the poor. Besides the price of a ticket is less as the price of maintenance.

Sorry Rob and others - guess my Topic on Crackdown on Motorcikes really resonated with the powers that be - next time I will be more careful. :)

Just time for changes in the rules.. not that it will ever happen as motorbikes are low so. I had expected with more and more richer Thais driving bigger bikes some changes would appear. I thought that the big bike vendors would lobby or something like that. But unfortunately they still see a scooter 125cc the same as a 1000cc racing bike

Not true, if you are in an accident, they will more than like test you if they smell alcohol. A guy hit me once & they tested him, .226

We went to the station & the first thing they did was give him his keys back, unbelievable.......

If we surveyed locals about the top crime issues in Thailand I don't think they would include stopping bikes over the white line or insurance in their top Top Ten?

Forced labour, child labour, illegal gambling, corruption would be nearer to the top of the list.

But I guess the BiB are not in the motorcycle industry.

Again, this thread and the posts which you and I are were replying to are about police stops. Nothing to do with what happens after an accident. Of course you will be arrested if you are drunk driving and in an accident. That is obvious.

Do you think Nomad drinks/ drives with insurance?????/

Sure I drink and drive/ride, but I never drive/ride drunk. (Not a big drinker) I always have compulsory insurance up to date, and almost always have 1st class insurance on my big bikes and cars, if that is what you're asking.
