PRESS FREEDOM
PCT discusses alleged ethical violations by independent weekly

BANGKOK: -- The Press Council of Thailand (PCT) on Tuesday met to discuss the junta's allegations against ASTV Weekend.

The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has alleged that the weekly's latest edition published several articles containing false information in a bid to discredit the junta.

The NCPO has vowed to take action against the paper if the claim that the weekly newspaper has violated media ethics proves to be true.

The PCT and ASTV Weekend say the junta should first identify which parts of the weekly are deemed to be violations of media ethics.

The NCPO has also ordered the press council, of which ASTV Weekend is a member, to launch an ethics probe against those involved.

PCT chairman Chakkrish Permpool earlier announced that the council would not protect ASTV Weekend if it was found to have breached media ethics.

ASTV Weekend is a part of the ASTV Manager group. The group’s top executive Jittanart Limthongkul said he would immediately launch an internal probe if the NCPO clarified which pieces of information were false.
