Free bus and train services extended for another six months

BANGKOK, 30 July 2014 (NNT) - The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) has given the green light to the proposal allowing the public to continue using free buses and trains until January 31, 2015.

NCPO leader General Prayuth Chan-ocha stated that the policy has been able to lessen the financial burden and cost of living among low-income earners to a certain extent.

General Prayuth has also decided to extend the diesel tax reduction period until the end of August 2014. Without the tax reduction, diesel prices are poised to rise according to the market forces.

Reducing the excise diesel tax has resulted in a loss of 9 billion baht per month in revenue for the Excise Department. From April 20, 2011 to June 20, 2014, the department has reported a total loss of 336 billion baht in diesel tax collections.

Seven districts in Amnart Charoen declared flood disaster zones

BANGKOK: -- The Amnart Charoen provincial administration Wednesday declared seven districts flood disaster zones after the farmlands there have already been inundated for more than seven days.

The seven districts are Muang, Hua Taphan, Lua Amnart, Phana, Senang Khanikhom, Pathumrat Wongsa and Chanumarn districts.

Songphan Chansawang, the chief agricultural officer of Amnart Charoen, said the declaration of disaster zones would allow the provincial administration to speed up alleviation efforts to help farmers. He said farmers would be eligible to receive compensations at the rate of Bt1,300 per rai.

He said the floods had killed paddy rice which had just been planted by farmers.

General Prayuth feels concerned about the degradation of Thai language

BANGKOK, 30 July 2014 (NNT) - The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha has expressed his worries regarding the wrong usage of Thai language and vocabularies that have been prevalent among youths and Thais in general nowadays.

General Prayuth yesterday gave a public speech through Radio Thailand about the Thai National Language Day, which has been celebrated on July 29th of every year.

He has urged Thai youths in particular to value their national language and be grateful of their ancestors who have painstakingly developed the Thai alphabets, which have been in existence for more than 700 years.

Thailand is one of the few countries in the world to have their own language. For this reason, General Prayuth has requested all Thais to see the importance of this in order to preserve their cultural heritage.

According to a recent survey conducted by Bangkok Poll, 84.7 percent of the respondents believe that the quality of Thai language has degraded to a serious level, which is clearly evident in posted messages on social media such as Line and Facebook.

Reasons may include a lack of interest in reading, the advent of social media to use unorthodox forms of language, and the laziness to properly spell something for easier communication.

Commerce ministry to hold new round of rice auction

BANGKOK, 30 July 2014 (NNT) - The Ministry of Commerce is preparing to distribute rice with the auction method in August this year. It has confirmed the rice has good quality and meets standards.

Permanent Secretary for Commerce Chutima Boonyapraphatson said the ministry would continue with its plan to distribute 200,000-500,000 tons of rice in government warehouses from August to September 2014. The rice distribution would be delayed during the period when the produce was abundant in order to prevent effects on rice prices in the market, said Ms Chutima.

Ms Chutima stated further that she expected that the Department of Foreign Trade would be able to arrange an action for the rice from the beginning of August to September this year. She also confirmed the rice had passed quality inspection and forecast that Thailand would be able to export ten million tons of rice this year.
