crazygreg44
I carried a copy of my passport in my wallet for almost 4 years, until two weeks ago, when in the Lotus supermarket, i felt an urge and the toilet didn't have any paper. So I cleaned myself with that old ragged passport copy and flushed it down. There you are. Do I need a new one ? I got a Thai drivers license, and they said that this is enuff

I have just noticed that my passport number on my thai driving license, is the old passport, better get that changed pronto. Will carry my passport until i change driving license, then gamble on a cop accepting my driving license

Bernard Flint
No need to carry your original or even copy of passport. Tooo easy to lose it. Just make sure to carry some 500 baht notes, fold them triple sided so it fits in the palm of your hand, for the special occasions that u need to do some ''palm greesing'' GREASING

thailiketoo
Failure to produce your passport is different than presenting it on the spot. That is of course the point that will never again be mentioned because it is not scary. The reporter should have asked for clarification as in all of these passport stories but somehow they never remember to ask any questions. There must be a new journalism school out there that teaches dumbing down as a prerequisite to graduation.
ATF
Bulldozer you need not worry since you have tattooed your passport on your arm. Can't wait until you show it to a cop. You may get Tazered. Anyway how are the wedding plans coming along?
bkkjames
Thinking of launching a service called Grab Passpy - a storage facility for passports - with the app you can request yours to be delivered to you anywhere in Bangkok (sorry, due to limited resources the rest of you will either have to move or carry yours). But thinking outside of the box for a min now: To avoid being asked 20 times to produce it let's say if you walking down Sukhumvit, we we make a zone wherein you only have to produce it once to enter. Kinda like passport control at the airport...
benj005
Just 2 questions: 1. Can I make a copy of my passport and carry that with me? 2. Or better yet I have an android smartphone with a huge screen. Can I just take photos of my passport and show the police if I'm asked for my passport? I don't like to carry my passport with me because I will lose it. I'm very forgetful. I've left my phone in stores and in cabs before.

I'm talking a photo of the front, back, insides of my passport. I also have my current NJ drivers license with a photo of me. Could I use that in conjunction with a photo of my passport? The Police will only need the original in a serious situation so you can either send your GF to get it or the Police will accompany you to get it. If you are driving you must have the original DL with you at all times. Edited July 31, 2014 by ATF
jvs
If you happen to have a yellow house book then that number will be on your driving license. If you take pics with your phone but you lose your phone you still have nothing to show. Scan all of your papers and send them to your own email, you will always be able to show them in any police station in the world.

trainman34014
Just because a Copper in the South says you gotta do it don't mean a Copper in the North will tell you the same. They all make up the rules as they see fit, quite often depending on what mood they are in or how much they need pockets refilled. Anyway; IMO it's more about Cambodian's, Burmese and those from Laos that they are aiming at and up here in the boonies few ripples will appear. samuibeachcomber
no way rosé I thought they just wanted an ID.for example car and bike licences carry passport number plus photo. But for visitors, tourists would n't you carry passport anyway or would you leave in a safe or at reception? Another alternative would be just to carry photo copy of first passport page and page holding current visa.

benj005
I don't mean to sound smug but why would they the police start harassing foreigners? We bring a substantial amount of money into Thailand. I don't know the exact figure but my guess is it would be in the billions. Money= Power and Leverage! No? My guess is if this crackdown starts affecting tourism dollars we will see the Thai government modify this law. $20,000 baht and possible jail time for not having your passport on you is crazy. I don't blame the government for wanting to get rid of the less desirable foreigners. I just feel that if you are here and you are doing everything correctly then you shouldn't run into any issues. Just my thoughts. Edited July 31, 2014 by benj005

Boycie
For those that haven't got a DL or a smartphone to store pictures.(or even if you do). Take your passport to any good printing shop and get them to make a credit card sized colour copy of your passport photo page and then laminate or they may even be able to print it on high quality cardpaper. Has come in handy quite a few times, when had no other ID on me and also got my wallet returned when i lost it. I've been carrying one in my wallet for years and still do now, even thou i've got a photo ID Thai DL
