webfact Posted July 31, 2014 Share Posted July 31, 2014 House Republicans vote to sue President Obama WASHINGTON: -- The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution to sue President Barack Obama for allegedly exceeding his constitutional powers. The 225-201 vote along party lines means House lawyers will now draft legal documents to launch a lawsuit. Its supporters say Mr Obama exceeded his powers when he delayed an insurance deadline in his healthcare law. The president himself has dismissed it as a waste of time. "Everyone sees this as a political stunt," he said. "If they're not going to do anything, we'll do what we can on our own," the president added. "And we've taken more than 40 actions aimed at helping hardworking families like yours. That's when we act - when your Congress won't." I think even a lay person would agree that delaying an insurance deadline in the healthcare law would be a presidential action, and certainly not be classified as conduct unrelated to his presidential duties. The Supreme Court has ruled that the president has absolute Immunity from civil lawsuits seeking damages for presidential actions. However, the Court ruled in Clinton v. Jones,520 U.S. 681, 117 S.Ct. 1636, 137 L.Ed.2d 945 (1997), that a sitting president does not have presidential immunity from suit over conduct unrelated to his official duties. The holding came in a civil suit brought by Paula Corbin Jones against President Clinton. Jones's suit was based on conduct alleged to have occurred while Clinton was governor of Arkansas.Clinton had sought to postpone the lawsuit until after he left office. And from a practical & strategic point of view ... The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has raised at least $7.6 million online since Republicans announced their intent to sue the president about a month ago. That's a lot of cash. Democrats have desperately been searching for ways to get their voters to go to the polls this fall. Even a third world country is smart enough to secure it's borders. The only thing it will accomplish is further reveal the Republican leaders for who they are and how they think. If the worst they can try and tar Obama with is: some obscure insurance dated thing, then it's pretty sad for Republicans who are continually scratching for dirt. Americans had to endure Reagan with Iran-Contra, then Bush Sr with 'read my lips, no new taxes' (he raised taxes mightily, of course, as did Reagan). Americans then had to endure Bush Jr., who won with less votes than his opponent, and who tarnished the reputation and career of one of his best men, General Powell, by sending Powell to stand in front of the UN (and the world) presenting data that everyone else in the Bush Jr. hierarchy knew was faulty. Immigrants to be Housed in 'Suites' Near San Antonio KARNES CITY - Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Friday will open a remodeled detention center three hours north of the Rio Grande Valley. The Karnes City center will house women and children who entered the country illegally through the Valley. The 532-bed facility underwent a massive renovation to house women and children. The center housed only adult immigrants in the past. Immigrants will be at the facility for an average of 23 days. The feds said the rooms will be referred to as "suites." The suites are furnished with bunk beds, play tables for children, flat-screen television sets and landline telephones. "I will refer to everyone in this facility as a resident. ICE generally refers to people in custody as detainees," ICE San Antonio Field Office Director Enrique Lucero said. Lucero oversaw the transformation of the center. The center has a soccer field covered with artificial turf, basketball courts, ping pong tables and a weight room. Officials also have plans to install a playground. A charter school from nearby San Antonio will provide schooling and access to a library for the immigrant children. The immigrants will get medical screenings. Children will receive physicals within 24 hours of arriving at the center and women within a week. "There is a dentist on site," Lucero said. There is a room where the immigrants will get to pick new clothes. Every illegal immigrant will be able to choose six sets of clothes, including shoes and socks. "While residents are here ... we will provide a safe and humane environment," Lucero said. The feds estimate it will cost approximately $74,000 a day to house 532 immigrants at the center. That's an average of $140 a day per person.
