Overstay on Tourist Visa, matter of days

Just wondering what is the situation in light of recent changes if you overstay a TV by a matter of days which I imagine is very common. I heard that you are given a days grace but after that is it 500 BHT / day?

I'm talking about minor overstays of up to a week here. Does anyone have any experience of this?

At both airports in Bangkok they don't charge a fine for an overstay of less than 24 hours.

So far there have been no problem for short overstays.

But there is no reason to overstay if it is 7 days or less because you can apply for a 7 day extension and only pay 1900 baht to get it. Seven days of overstay would cost 3500 baht.
