Public Health Ministry to cope with possible spread of MERS ahead of Hajj

BANGKOK, 31 July 2014 (NNT) – The Public Health Ministry is preparing measures to cope with possible outbreaks of deadly MERS coronavirus ahead of the annual pilgrimage to the Hajj in Saudi Arabia later this year.

The ministry has held a meeting with 12 health offices on the spread of MERS-CoV in the Middle East. So far, there have been no reports of MERS-CoV in Thailand but health officials have expressed concerns over the risks that Thai Muslim pilgrims would be facing on their pilgrimage journey.

Over 10,000 Thai Muslims will be traveling to Saudi Arabia in September for the Hajj. The World Health Organization (WHO) said that the global death toll from the MERS-CoV, mostly in middle-eastern countries including Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt and Yemen, has risen to at least 330 in late July. A total of 853 cases of MERS-CoV have been reported worldwide.

There had been fears that the influx of millions of pilgrims into Saudi Arabia during the Hajj could result in a resurgence of MERS cases. Saudi Arabia has intensified health measures such as self-screening to combat the threat.

The ministry will be giving Thai pilgrims health check-ups and vaccinations against influenza and meningococcal disease. A number of medical personnel will also be dispatched to Saudi Arabia to help provide additional treatments.

Rubbish!

I think that I would be more concerned about the Ebola virus being spread from the worshipers from states in western Africa.
