Nitty gritty on "points" vs. "miles"

Featured Replies

I've always collected specific airline miles;, mostly with UAL.  Managed to take them for five free round trips from the US to LOS over the last 9 years.  I'm starting to get to the end of my rope.  I went to Chase online, and got a IHG (international hotel group) Master Card.  They say I will get 60,000 points if I spend 1000 usd in the first three months.  Are these as good as miles?  Can I simply transfer them into my UAL or Delta program?  Any strings attached.  It's no fee for the first year, and 49 usd per year after, but you get a free Holiday Inn Night every year that you pay.  The Marriott card was 70K points, but you must spend 2000 usd the first three months.  I think that one is 95 a year, after the free year.  Any hints or clues?  Thanks!  No one needs to say UAL sucks; I am well aware of that....but some of the partners are excellent.

it would appear that you only get 2000 miles for every 10,000 points so your 60 k points only worth 12 k mileage in most airlines...overall not a good deal at all compared to cards like chase sapphire that let you transfer one to one points to miles with several airlines...

many better credit cards avail for more miles ....google is your friend.

yeah, the Marriott one is a lot better, you get the free room right away, and you can get 33,000 ual miles with yor 72,000 points.  Doesn't Saphire have some pretty hefty fees?

Gotta spend 5000 in 6 months.....decent deal though.  I got 50K delta miles for spending 1000 in three months last year.

If you ever go to USA the Southwest card is also good...get free roundtrip or two one ways most anywhere in USA...99 one year fee and spend 1000 in 3 months....
