There is this spray stuff which is supposed to repel cats; you put it on your couch or whatever and they avoid it.

I think its mainly for inside use though, probably won't keep them out of your yard but maybe you could spray it on your car.

Not cheap though; a small bottle is about 700 baht.

You want to get rid of them from your garden?

Easy. Plant lots of Nepeta Cataria (latin name). They hate the stuff and will run a mile.

Very good solution karen fighting nature with nature the green way.

I'm sorry to report, that I had no luck with orange peelings.

Had 3 oranges and I put the peelings under the car last night.

The kittens were in the engine, this morning.

The mother wouldn't go near the car as she usually does, but the little ones were there, 4 of them.

KarenBravo, Nepata Cataria is Catnip, and the cats love to roll around and play with catnip.

May be I'm wrong but this is what I read.

I read that chllie plants keep elephants away; they won't step over them or cross them. I wonder if it would work for cats too? The advantage is you can use the chillies.

Are you all making fun of me?

KarenBravo, first then you...........I don't know about catnip or cats, but I can tell you my garden is full of chilli plants,

These are the ones the MIL is complaining about that the cats litter.

This is the first time I have heard of anyone complaining about having lots of young stray pussy`s in their car. I never get such luck.

A method that I know always works:

1. Park the car somewhere in the shade or place a heavy cover over the bonnet or if you`re an American, the hood.

2. Wait until the car engine becomes completely cold if it has been on a run.

3. Dilute 4 or 5 caps full of Dettol disinfectant or any other type of strong disinfectant into a quarter full bucket of cold water.

4. Pour the Dettol/water solution over the car engine. Guaranteed to keep the cats at bay, because cats hate the smell of Dettol or any kinds of strong disinfectants, especially in confined space where the odour will be potent, plus it will deter them and does them no harm.

The reason why the car should be in the shade or covered and the engine cold is because it will take longer for the solution to vaporise and it will remain on the engine for longer periods.

Trust me on this one, it works.

You are being highly unimaginative here
There is the Mega-Sonic Cat Repeller
by STV
also various other hand held laser devices
They just require you to lie under the car all night with your available forefinger at the ready
Also Cats don't like Rats
Install Roland in your garden

A further alternative is to purchase a decent sprinkler system. open the bonnet and leave it running dusk til dawn. Not as though water is expensive here, is it?. PS Dettol is expensive. Try TCP. My mum had a good swig before entering any branch of Woolworths

Beetlejuice, Thank you for your suggestion.

The only problem, I can foresee here is that the car will smell like a hospital.

And I hate hospitals and their smell.

That`s the general idea, if you can`t stand the smell, neither will the cats.

We had a pick up here and when my cats were young they all loved to settle into the dark confines of the pick up`s engine compartment. I gave them the Detto treatment and it worked. I done this process for a couple of weeks then my cats learned the lesson and have not invaded my vehicle since.

My grandmother taught me this trick years ago. She used to sprinkle a little TCP in the corners of her living room when house training her cats.

Or you could try just mixing 1 cap full of Dettol with some water to see if that works? Otherwise I don`t think there is much else you can do.

I don't think we are being entirely helpful here

Costas's dilemma is so severe

MiLord Costas is obviously worried about the future as much as the present. Those little kitties will be having theirovaries steamed into fertility at top speed (c10000rpm)by the warmth of the SUV engine.
I sent Mrs Lao Lover to the Wat to seek a solution. Imaginative as ever the Abbot at once texted the Abbot at the Lao temple across the river. The reply: I will willingly accept delivery of a cargo of kittens. So it is simple: bundle the whole feline menagerie into a crate. Ship it to Laos where, no doubt, they will eat or be eaten. I had a cat,
once, called Polonius.

I wasn't making fun....elephants really do hate chillies.

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2006/09/060918-elephants-chili.html

Maryann Mott

September 18, 2006

Conflicts between farmers and elephants have long been widespread in Africa, where pachyderms nightly destroy crops, raid grain houses, and sometimes kill people.

Now farmers are fighting back with an unlikely weapon: chili peppers. Elephants don't like capsaicin, the chemical in chilies that makes them hot.

By planting a few rows of the pungent fruit around valuable crops, framers create a buffer zone through which the elephants are reluctant to pass."

Pity it doesn't work on cats.

Buy an airsoft gun and shoot the cats with that... its fun for you and will not kill or hurt the cats...

Could also maybe start a business get a few airsoft guns some stuffed toys charge 20b for 3 plastic balls hit a cat get a toy. If it really takes off then get a few thai staff on board and you now have your visa and work permit sorted all because of these cats.

Costas, do you just hate them in your engine? Or you want to get rid of them from your property.

Since your neighbors all have dogs, and you used to have dogs as well. I was thinking you could "borrow" your neighbor's dogs for a few days, let them mark their territories, and during this time, the cats will "immigrate" to laos.

Then you forever have no cats in your land, as they see it as dangerous territory.

Great thread, good solutions and some gut busters... beats the buggery out of the 'what visa for a digital whatever'... but I digress.

About this time last year I relocated to a rental where the cats had moved in while the property was vacant. It was also near the top of a relatively dog-free cul de sac so they had free reign. I don't mind cats until they start that midnight yowling and the feline equivalent of, "Where's the pussy?", "Over here!" and "Stitch that you mangy old bugger, she's mine!" Anyway, I sought advice in these very pages and apart from the rabbit and BB gun, there wasn't much useful or humane. However a google search yielded the solution, literally.

Take about 5 tablespoons of black pepper in a couple of cups of water and bring to the boil then let it cool. Don't, I mean DON'T EVEN THINK about sniffing it or else you have to start the whole process over again once you have got home from the ER. Get some muslin (or your giks pantyhose) and sieve the cooled down mix into a regular spray bottle. Then spray the pepper juice wherever you see cat 'litter' on the ground, around the walls, and in the OP's case pop the hood/bonnet and spray around the donger and down the sides. Spraying around the tires and wherever you think they are making their vehicular approaches may help too. If you have a chance to access your walls from the other side, you may like me, see all these dirty little kitty footprints where they jump up onto the wall. Spray that as well.

In my experience, after just one spray session, the noisy cats moved well away and I did a 'refresher' spray about a month later when I guess it had all evaporated and they started moving in again. I added cayenne and paprika to the second batch ('cos I'm an evil bugger) and after the second application, they never came back. Now that was in dry season so the OP may need to double up on quantities and application or strictly limit it to the truck engine and bits but I reckon that will solve the problem.

Jac, it's not that I hate them in the engine, but I don't want to kill any more.

Already, me and the wife managed to get 3 of them and took them to the Wat.

Only one left.

What worries me is when the other cats start having kittens it will be the same story over and over again.

Borrowing the dogs, could be a solution, that I have to discuss with the neighbours.

I will let you know.

Thanks for the advice.
