Inflation will rise slightly after increasing civil service salaries

BANGKOK, Aug 8 -- Thailand's Commerce Ministry said Friday a plan to increase salaries of civil servants by 8 per cent, expected to start in 2015, would impact inflation in the country only 0.05 per cent, said Ampawan Pichalai, director of Commerce Ministry’s Trade Policy and Strategy Office.

Thai students win 4 awards at International Robotic Olympiad 2014

BANGKOK, Aug 8 - Thai students have won four awards at the International Robotic Olympiad 2014 in Hong Kong.

Seven teams of students representing Thailand won four top prizes at the 16th International Robotic Olympiad held in Hong Kong during August 5-8, 2014, according to Kamol Rodklai, Secretary-General of the Office of the Basic Education Commission.

The four award categories include Robot Sheepdog, Hand Generator 2-leg Robot Short Distance, Hand Generator Worm Robot Short Distance Run and Planet Exploration.

This year’s international robotics challenge was held at the University of Hong Kong with more than 500 participants from primary and secondary schools from around the world. (MCOT online news)

ASEAN celebrates 47th anniversary

BANGKOK, Aug 8 -- The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on Friday celebrated the 47th anniversary of its establishment, aiming at encouraging youth to become enthusiastic about the scheduled launching of the ASEAN Community (AC) at the end of 2015.

Rights group out to protect Andy Hall

BANGKOK: -- Nearly 100 international and national labour and human rights groups and NGOs today sent a joint-letter to members of the Thai Pineapple Industry Association (TPIA), calling on them to to urge TPIA member Natural Fruit to drop the criminal and civil charges it leveled against researcher and labor rights activist Andy Hall.


According to a statement, signatories to the letter include representatives of more than 20 countries, as well as global organisations including the International Trade Union Confederation, European Coalition for Corporate Justice (ECCJ) and Human Rights Watch. The letter requests the removal of Wirat Piyapornpaiboon, CEO of Natural Fruit as TIPA president and the revocation of Natural Fruit's membership in TPIA if it refuses to drop the case.

A suspected arms supplier for red-shirt thugs arrested
 

BANGKOK: -- Another suspect who allegedly supplied arms to red-shirt thugs to harass protesters of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee during the protests earlier this year has been arrested by police.

Supreme Court rejects Sondhi’s bail request

BANGKOK: -- The Supreme Court has turned down the request for bail of Manager Group founder Sondhi Limthongkul and his associates who are facing a 20-year jailterm for falsifying information of an affiliated company in violation of the Securities Act.
