Two doctors face probe for providing surrogacy services

BANGKOK: -- Two doctors who provided surrogacy services will be investigated by an ethical panel of the Medical Council.

Medical Council chief Dr Somsak Lolekha said Thursday that the council had received adequate information implicating the two doctors for allegedly breaching announcement 1/2540 and announcement 21.2545 of the Medical Council regarding assisted reproduction technology.

The announcements stipulate that the surrogate mothers must be blood relatives of the biological parents, must have a child of their own before and age between 20-35 and, above all, the surrogacy must be for commercial purpose.

Dr Somsak said that once the ethical panel had completed its probe, the findings will be submitted to the executive committee of the Medical Council for consideration before a committee is to be appointed to met out the penalties.

He said that the whole process might take several months because the Medical Council has to be very cautious because the issue at stake in sensitive and, also, bearing in mind that the council itself may be sued.

There may be a lot of abandoned farang kids in Thailand soon, surrogate mothers going underground having the kids then abandon them threw fear of prosecution.
