Non Imm O Visa from Melbourne

Featured Replies

Hi all. I am curious about the Non Imm O. I thought it was only if you were married to a Thai/visiting a relative or a volunteer (Or an OA visa for retirees). But the Melbourne consulate states that a Non Imm O Visas 'is for applicants on a long term holiday, visiting family or friend, or volunteer purposes'. The key phrase I am interested in is the ' long term holiday' bit. Is this correct or an old rule or am I just misunderstanding it? The full entry is at http://www.thaiconsulatemelbourne.com/non-immigrant-visa.php

Has anyone applied for a non imm O visa at Melbourn for a long term holiday?

Cheers

My Non Imm O Visa was issued from Brisbane.

Not married, but have a Thai gf.

Yes, so you applied to visit a relative or friend ... my question is really about the 'long term holiday' bit. I mean, realistically it might be a misplaced comma ... it might be that the comma should be 'and'. But since the consul is English I don't think it's a grammatical error.

Thanks for the laugh. Read through a few threads written by teachers of English from England in the Thai Visa education forum. That should disabuse you of the notion that being English magically eliminates spelling and grammatical errors. In any event the consul probably cut and pasted most of what appears there if he even had anything  personally to do with the website.

If you're going on about the use of the expression "long term holiday," the Non-Imm O is not meant to be a visa for general tourists. Tourists should apply for the aptly named tourist visa. Why do you think you want/need a Non-Imm O? If you're planning to apply for an extension based on retirement, for example, it would be reasonable to get a Non-Imm O. There are other equally good reasons for getting a Non-Imm O, but going on holiday wouldn't be one of them.

Different Thai consulates and embassies in different countries approach some of these things differently, but here is what the LA consulate has to say. (The red bold is their choice for emphasis, not mine). It probably sums up the spirit of the current state of things.

NO MULTIPLE-ENTRY NON-IMMIGRANT VISAS FOR EMPLOYMENT.  Applying for a multiple-entry visa will only delay your application while you send a new money order for a single-entry visa.  For information on procedure for working in Thailand see "Standard Process for Foreigners Who Wish to Work in Thailand."
Please note that we CANNOT issue the Non-Immigrant visas for STUDY MUAY THAI, DIVE TRAINING, MASSAGE SCHOOL, STUDYING THAI LANGUAGE, MEDITATION, etc. without a letter from the Thai Ministry of Education approving the study.  In addition, Non-immigrant visas will NOT be issued for such purposes as tourism, visiting friends, visiting fiancé/fiancée, seeking employment opportunities, looking for a school for teaching or studying purposes, etc.  Please apply for the Tourist Visa.

The Consulate will consider Non-Immigrant Visa applications on a case-by-case basis and may ask for additional documents.

Suradit69 - yes you are completely correct about the English and I should know better as I'm a uni teacher!

But I am not going to apply for the visa at present ... maybe in a few years. I am just curious about the information - as I have previously spent many months in Thailand on a tourist visa. Because it is worded very specifically that you can apply for the visa for a long term holiday, it piqued my curiosity as it would seem more sensible to get this than a tourist visa. But I've never heard of it being the case that you can use it simply for a longterm holiday unless it's to visit family/friends or volunteer.

So I  am really hoping for someone with experience of Melbourne who has ever come across this wording and tried to get one.

Cheers

OP ... How old are you?

What do you define as a 'long holiday', in terms of months?

Not sure what my age has to do with it - I'm not old enough to get a retirement visa if that is what you are hinting at?

I don't know ... I guess a long holiday would be 6 months plus ... I spent 8 months there last year on tourist visas on holiday, leaving for a month to travel in Laos.

I ma really just curious. As I said I am not intending on getting one right now, I've just never seen anywhere else that makes it sound as though it is valid simply for a long term holiday. TBH if I came back again for that length of time I would get an Ed Visa as I would like to learn Thai. This is a question of curiosity.

Settle petal ... no need to jump down my throat ... we are trying to help you.

The reason I asked about your age was that unless you are 50+ you wouldn't qualify for an 'O' class Visa.

Considering your attitude, I'll leave you to discover the options.

Hi David

I'm sorry if I came across as being impatient or rude. That definitely wasn't my intent. As mentioned this is not specifically for me, it's out of curiosity as to what the wording on the Melbourne Consulate website means and if it is simply badly worded. I'm guessing that it is just a wording thing, given other reading that I've done.

My Non Imm O Visa was issued from Brisbane.

Not married, but have a Thai gf.

Did you receive a single or multiple entry?

What documents did you need?

When did you get it issued (recent reports from this year would be best).

I have a Thai fiancee but am not yet married. For me getting permission to get married from my fiancees parents is much more of a financial burden or difficulty than any immigration requirements so if it's possible to get a visa on the basis of being in a relationship with a Thai, rather than must be married, I'd be eager to get my visa that way and avoid the whole visa exemption/tourist visa uncertainty fiasco. As I travel a lot and don't spend my whole time in Thailand anyway (I travel a lot for work in the region), the non-imm O multi entry would serve my needs beautifully.

Unfortunately, neither Vancouver nor Los Angeles appears to be able or willing to issue a non-B for the sorts of purposes that other more "friendly" consulates in other places such as in Australia are. Each Thai consulate/embassy is different.

We all know that only Penang can issue a non-B multi (of the major consulates/embassies in ASEAN) and then only with a work permit valid for at least 8 months I believe. All other consulates/embassies issue 3-month singles for employment.

Tom, if you work for a larger APEC based company have a read of this.
