Ministry seeks action against fertility clinic

BANGKOK: -- THE PUBLIC HEALTH MINISTRY yesterday sought police action against a Bangkok fertility clinic at the centre of the surrogacy scandal.

The ministry has alleged that All IVF operated without a proper licence and allowed medical professionals to carry out procedures that breached the Medical Profession Act

The ministry's legal expert, Chatree Pinyai, said the clinic provided in vitro fertilisation services but its doctor-owner was an obstetrician and gynaecologist who was only qualified to handle normal pregnancies.

He said that in order to run a fertility clinic, the doctor should have obtained a specialised certificate from the Royal Thai College of the Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Chatree said the department would strictly check all fertility clinics to ensure they followed doctors' ethics and the Medical Council of Thailand's (TMC) assisted reproductive technology regulations.

People seeking treatment must have a fertility problem and the surrogate mother must be a blood relative of the couple and must not be paid.

All IVF had been closed while it was being investigated, Chatree said, adding that the TMC was now checking 10 other fertility clinics.

Metropolitan Police Area 5 chief Maj-General Seubsak Phansura said police would summon those involved with All IVF to be questioned and if they failed to show up warrants for their arrest would be sought.

Going to turn nasty very quickly.....I can see international court actions happening soon!

The kids would be turning 21 before any international court issued a judgement...a judgement they can't enforce.

I feel sorry for those prospective 'parents' who may have their hopes dashed and future plans ruined. Lets hope that empathy permeates the law process and decisions.
