NLA president, vice presidents appointed by royal command

BANGKOK: -- His Majesty the King Sunday issued a royal command to appoint Pornpetch Wichitcholchai as the National Legislative Assembly president and Surachai Liengboonlertchai and Pirasak Porjit as NLA vice presidents.

NLA to discuss budget bill Monday

BANGKOK: -- Members of the National Legislative Assembly were Sunday informed to attend a meeting on Monday when the 2015 budget bill is scheduled to be deliberated.

Senate Secretary General Norarat Pimsen, acting NLA secretarhy general, sent a circular to the NLA members to attend the meeting.

The meeting is also scheduled for setting up two NLA panels - one for drafting meeting regulations and another to be in charge of NLA affairs.

BANGKOK: -- An Australian same-sex couple has been permitted to leave Thailand with a surrogate baby after background checks by Thai immigration authorities, reports said Sunday.

Poll shows most people want a strong and decisive prime minister

BANGKOK: -- 93.86 percent of the respondents of the Dusit Poll of Ratchabhat University, Suan Dusit campus want the new prime minister to have strong leadership, to be well-rounded, charismatic and decisive.

The same poll shows that 84.5 percent wants the cabinet ministers to be honest, loyal to the Monarchy and capable.

81.87 percent want the cabinet screening process to be transparent and fair wheras 78.58 percent want the ministers to be smart, knowledgeable and capable which is recognizable.

Surprisingly, only 63.16 percent prefer the ministers to be visionary.

As for the required qualifications of the members of the National Reform Council, the poll results are as follows:

86.55 percent of the respondents want the NRC members to be honest, ethical and incorrupt; 78.07 percent want the NRC members to have experiences and to be specialized in certain areas; 70.47 percent want the NRC’s selection process to be fair and transparent; 67.84 percent want the NRC members to be dedicated to their jobs and 62.57 percent want the NRC to be independent and neutral.

The above poll was conducted during August 12-16. A total of 1,368 samplings were polled.

Incomplete Central Phuket underpass opened to traffic to ease traffic after flood

PHUKET: When heavy raIns resulted in light flooding and heavy trafficat the junction in front of Central Festival Phuket on Saturday morning, officials opted to open the underpass to traffic temporarily, even though the pumping and electrical systems are not ready for operation.
