NCPO affirms peace dialogues to resolve southern unrest remain on track

BANGKOK, 17 August 2014 (NNT) - The National Council for Peace and Order affirms that the efforts to restore peace to Thailand’s southernmost region through dialogues still continue although adjustments might have been made to systemise the process.

NCPO leader Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha has assured that the peace dialogues to resolve decades of violence in the country’s southern border area is still going on and with collaboration from Malaysia, who acts as a facilitator for Thailand.

Gen. Prayuth, however, said that the framework of the dialogues is to be revisited, with an aim to truly rid the region of any conflict for good.

He added that the NCPO has been doing its best to resolve the problems in the far South, which erupted in 2004 and has since taken more than 5,000 lives. However, the NCPO chief stressed that fighting will be inevitable as long as ill-intended groups continue their movements to achieve their goal. He also urged the public to stay vigilant as they live their normal life in the conflict-ridden region.
