Don't make a confirmed booking. A provisional one wont hurt, but don't part with any money.

In fact, the embassy recommend not booking flights until she knows she is going to get the visa.

Have you got the "reason to return" bit well covered because thats the one they'll get you on. ??

Hi..........

I was very interested in this topic, I too have a girlfriend in Pattaya whom I'd like to bring to the UK for a holiday.

No doubt we will be in Bangkok getting the visa before too long, can I ask what you meant by the 'reason to return' bit.

Thanks for your help.

He means the embassy have to be satisfied that GF will return to thailand and not stay in the UK, eg theyve got employment or own property to comeback to ...along those lines, if theyve got neither theyd look at it from the point of view will she comeback and more likely refuse the visa.. mind im no expert!

Basically, before issuing a visit visa the ECO needs to be satisfied that, on the balance of probabilities, the applicant is a genuine visitor and will leave the UL when, or before, the visa expires.

For the average tourist this is not a major problem, they have a job and maybe own property etc. For many girl/boyfriends of Brits it can be, as they will have no 'proper' job, i.e. an employer who will confirm that they will still have a job when they return, and no property. Even having children is not a valid reason by itself as many Thais travel long distances, often abroad, to work and leave their children in the care of grandparents etc.

However, this does not mean that they will not get a visa, as there are other 'reasons to return.' For many, the relationship with their British partner can be the reason.

If the ECO is satisfied that on the balance of probabilities the relationship is genuine and so the reason for visiting the UK is genuine, then they will also believe that the applicant would not want to jeopardise any future spouse or fiance application by overstaying or otherwise breaking the conditions of a visit visa.

What this means is that one is very unlikely to get a visit visa for a girl that one's barfined for a week or two, but if the relationship is long term (3-4 months minimum, IMO) then there is a very good chance of success.
