Their Majesties offer aid to northeastern flood victims

BANGKOK, 22 August 2014 (NNT) – Their Majesties the King and Queen have provided assistance to flood victims in Ubon Ratchathani after the northeastern province had been hit with heavy rains and landslides.

Provincial authorities have been instructed by Their Majesties to offer financial aid to a number of local households affected by the recent natural disasters. 500 relief packages have also been given to locals in the province.

Mobile medical units have provided free medical check-ups and dental services to residents living in the area.

The Meteorological Department has also warned provinces in the Northeast and East to brace for more heavy rains. The southwestern monsoon continues to cover the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, bringing thunderstorms and strong winds. Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, Nong Khai, Sakon Nakhon, Prachinburi and Nakhon Nayok will be worst hit by the storm.

Most of Bangkok and its vicinity will experience scattered thundershowers and the weather will continue to be cloudy.

Passenger vans required to register for yellow license plates

BANGKOK, 22 August 2014 (NNT) – Authorities are urging more passenger van operators in the country to register for a yellow license plate before the end of the deadline.

Van operators are instructed to attend meetings with relevant agencies and register themselves between August 25-29 at the Army’s 2nd Cavalry Division (King's Guard).

The yellow license plates are permitted exclusively for public transportation vehicles. The vans will be divided into three categories, which are vans operating in Bangkok, in other provinces, and those currently contracted by a company that obtained a license from the Land Transport Department.

Local police also said that within the past month, a total of 90 van operators were arrested for breaking the new regulations and 57 were apprehended for not having proper licenses. Police noted that the number of arrests is decreasing, as more operators comply with the law.

The move is in line with the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO)’s policy to reorganize the public transportation system.

Prayuth says old power groups still try to cause Thailand to be 'dysfunctional state'

BANGKOK: -- General Prayuth, the NCPO chief, said Friday that there were still efforts by "old powers and influence groups" to "bring us back to the dysfunctional state we were in".

He said they were "trying to come back in and change things back to the way they were by using social movements, especially those linked to the poor or those with low income. If we let things go on as they did the old way, it is likely that Thailand will have much to suffer in the future. Accordingly, this will also slow down the country's development."

Prayuth was speaking during his weekly TV programme "Returning Happiness to the People" broadcast nationwide Friday night.
