Even I was reluctant to post in the other thread something that is totally unrelated with its main topic just to show you that one can easily perform with SRWare Iron what you requested, thus, I can understand that other members preferred performing their own tests in this thread instead.

As I wrote before, your problem could be caused by many things, and even if I strongly suspect that it is related to an add-on, it has to be checked properly. Even if your add-ons have been downloaded and installed recently, it doesn't prevent you from encountering some compatibility issues, for instance. Some add-ons are developped for one specific browser (or one specific version of a browser) and can cause several issues if they are used with another one. I suggest that you read the following webpage (for instance): http://internet.answers.com/web-browsers/understanding-browser-add-ons

Again, your problem might be caused by something else and troubleshooting it properly might require a much longer investigation, but that's where I would start if I were you.

As you will know, this morning I downloaded Chrome, and without any add-on installed, it had the exactly same issue with that particular post. I haven't tried any other posts with Chrome since it was obvious that the problem was the same as with Iron.

Before installing Chrome, you should have fully uninstalled SRWare Iron and all its add-ons, make sure that there were nothing left (including registry settings) related to your previous installation of SRWare Iron and reboot your computer, but I doubt that you did it properly, thus, further tests are not conclusive.

Often, a user who is not an IT professional believes that some issues are similar when they are actually not caused by the same things.

Again, there are many things that could cause your problem, but at this stage, I would need to perform a thorough full analysis of your computer.

In that case I suggest we just forget about it, as if it has never happened, since installing a browser and surfing the web is supposed to be a fun thing for me not a daytime job from which I get headaches.

If one has to do all this before installing a new software application, then I would think that the issue is not the s/w application, but instead with the OS that is being used.

That's not one has to do before installing a new software application, but what should have been performed (IMHO) in that particular case, taking into account what has been done previously and what JesseFrank wanted to evaluate then.

I think a lot of folks have problems with quoting obviously with any browser since I see so many messed up quotes

on TV wink.png

What I personally have always done & find easiest is to turn off BBC Code mode

(Small light switch icon in upper left of reply box

It is then easy to see what is being quoted & what is being removed

As long as you understand basically how to read it from [*quote] to [*/quote]

*...added in above example so you could see the bracketed codes

PS: had never heard of SRWare Iron & grabbed it this morning to try.

Nice quick browser & very nice that you can just edit the adblock.ini yourself

Especially for this ad heavy site

Ok here is another annoying thing which I hope some Iron user can help me with.

When I receive emails with an attachment I'm not able to open them directly with the appropriate program. With FF when I clicked the download button I was asked if I wanted to open or save.

In Iron only option to choose where to save, but no option to open.

This will fill up the disk space pretty quickly of course.

How do I work around this ?

I was not aware Iron had a mail client?

You sure abut that? Your using Iron for mail?

Or do you mean your going thru a website to get your mail?

If so it is just some setting probably to do with how the website is seeing you

If so why not just use a mail client like Mozilla Thunderbird?

Why I would need to use an email client if I can check my gmail webbased.

The issue I experience has nothing to do with the website.

I did a google for it and there is a lot of talk about it from Iron and Chrome users, but no answers that I could find, so it seems that I'm not the only one who is annoyed with it

It is true you can check with a browser a web based mail

But using a client is nicer IMHO

For one thing you do not have the problem you describe & mail is sent to your computer

You can also choose to leave a copy or not on the web based server

I choose not to do so.

That aside I just did a quick test for you

I sent an attachment to my Gmail account

Logged into gmail online using SRWare Iron browser

Version 36.0.1950.0 (285000)

There I saw my test message received with attachment

When you hover your mouse cursor over attachment

I have 3 options

1-Download...which saves it to downloads folder ( downward facing arrow icon on left)

2-Save to Drive....which saves to your google drive ( recycle looking icon on right)

3- View ( by just clicking it ) it which opens it much the same way a thumbnail opens here on TV to view

I think you should play with your browser a bit more & learn to use it better

It seems to me to be a very good fast browser & quite intuitive in usage

I definitely don't get those options. The only options I get is download or drive, and going from the Google results, you seem to be the only one who get's that option..

I have no idea what your talking about. The attachment shows exactly the same as in firefox, but when I click the download button in FF I get the option to save and where to save or open with the appropriate program installed on my PC.

When I click on the download button in Iron I get the option to choose the download location, but no option to open it without saving first.

I clicked the link in your post, and there is nothing about this subject in the help files.

No, he is not the only one. Anyway, you should get an option named "Save link as..." when you right-click on the attachment and it's what you need to select in order to save your attachment where you want. Agreed, it's a not an appropriately named menu option.

Read my original post about this subject again. I DON'T want to save the attachment, I want to open it directly with the program installed on my PC, as is possible in every other browser, and after viewing just trash the message including the attachment.

I don't want the inconvenience from going to a download folder to delete the attachment.

Oh, sorry, I've missed that part. I use an email client which is more convenient for me and I usually don't do that. By the way, it's not a good practice for security reasons to directly open and run a program (that is not only a viewer) located on your computer by directly clicking an attachment in an email. It seems that you are prevented to do so by default with SRWare Iron, and that's probably for phishing and malware protection. Edited by GuyL

What is the difference in security between opening a program directly and saving it first and then opening it. You mean I should scan each attachment that I receive from close friends ?

In my opinion, your mileage may differ of course, is Iron the most inconvenient browser I have experienced since I started using the internet 15 years ago.

I'm still testing it today, but I discover a new inconvenience every other hour, so it will most probably be ditched before the end of the day.

I use a browser for the convenience of surfing the web, not to stay busy

Yes, it's best practice to scan (virus and other malware detection) an attachment (even if it was sent by close friends, because they can have been unknowingly infected by a virus themselves) before opening it with certain programs. By the way, it's quite easy for a programmer to send emails with a forged email address, therefore, you should not be too trusting, especially with attachments sent to you by anybody.

Yes, it seems that SRWare Iron is not for you, but that doesn't mean that it is a bad browser. Each browser has its own pros and cons, but I do think that this kind of malware and fishing protection is a good thing for most users.

I have Avast antivirus installed with all functions enabled. I also have Malwarebytes pro installed with online protection enabled and scan my PC frequently and never find any treats, so my guess is that I'm well protected without Iron. Furthermore do I think that Gmail itself has quite good protection from itself.

Quite possibly, but SRWare Iron was conceived this way in order to protect by default its users working in various environments. It's possible to disable some of its security features (in its advanced settings), but I would not recommend it and I don't feel the need, nor have much time for this today, to investigate any further whether or not it will operate the way you want after that.

Actually his problem could be his antivirus reacts differently with Iron than FF

But in any case Using Iron does in fact allow one the options of viewing attachments without downloading

Jesse has problems that are not directly related to his browser although it appears so to him..

Trust me I was a Systems Administrator for over 140 users in a company & it is very hard to

help folks indirectly ...over the phone thru email etc.

I usually had to eventually go to where they were in the company & see what was going on with their computer

Sorry Jesse would like to help you but I can only assure you it is not a FF vs Iron problem

It is something on your end & you or someone with the skills needed will have to suss it out in person.

Unless someone gets lucky & explains or finds your problem from this remote way of dealing with it.

But too many variables exist

Viewing attachments without downloading them works fine for me too within SRWare Iron, but, if I have understood JesseFrank correctly, he would like to open them directly with his associated-by-default programs that are installed on his computer (for instance, within MS Word for .doc and .docx files, etc.), and it seems that SRWare Iron prevents this by default and uses its own viewing application instead.

Then tell me how.

When I get a attachment, lets say a WMV file, I can mouse over the attachment and it will show a downward arrow and some kind of triangle.

The triangle is to save it on drive, when I click on the arrow it will pop up a window where I can select in which folder to save it.

A third option is to click the attachment frame, which would normally open it in Gmails own viewer, but with most of the file types it says "sorry no preview available" and again asks me to download.

I haven't tried yet with a .wmv file, but for instance, with a .doc /.docx file, .xls, .xlsx file, a .jpg file, a .pdf file (etc.), in order to launch the viewing application, I just click once (left click) on the attachment (thumbnail), but not on any icon, so not on the downward arrow nor on this kind of triangle that you mention (you may sometimes also see a pen which allows you to edit certain types of files, for instance Excel files can be edited with Google Sheets), just anywhere else.

Edit: Seems that it's what you said being your third option.

Ok, sorry JesseFrank, but as stated previously, I usually manage my emails via an email client, therefore, I am also discovering a few things at the moment with the Gmail webmail interface.

It seems that your problem with certain types of files in attachment is not related to SRWare Iron per se, but to Gmail online functionalities that don't allow you to preview certain types of files. I just tried with an .mts file in attachment and also got the "Apologies. There is no preview available." message.

I don't think that it would operate differently with any other browser, unless you have installed a specific piece of software (add-on, plug-in, widget, etc.) that allows you to manage / visualise those types of files directly via your webmail interface.

That's what I'm talking about all the time, other browsers allow you to use software on your computer to directly visualize them, and that is an inconvenience for me since I get often WMV and MP4 files.
