File Damaged Or Busy

Featured Replies

I have some data files (not system files) on my pc that return this message when try to delete them.

Rebooting does not change the status.

How can I get rid of the files?

Is there anyway of forcing a delete??

Running W2000SP4 with NTFS file system.

Thanks

Sounds like the system thinks the files are in use by a process - possibly due to the PC crashing at some stage.

Have you tried deleting them in safe mode?

If that fails go get MstIsUsedBy HERE this great little program will tell which process is using the files.

Dear Astral,

Have you tried running scandisk?

My Computer -> Right Click on C drive (I presume) ->Properties -> Tools -> Check now

After running scandisk then try to delete again.

This is a "maybe it will work" not a guarantee. But if you don't use scandisk it is useful to do it anyway.

Hope you are keeping well,

All the Best

Might try booting in Safe Mode, Command Prompt only mode and CD to the directory and trying to manually delete it. This should preclude the operating system having a hold on it.

I have the same problem with an .ai file (photoshop). I'll try and see what happens.

another program to 'unlock' your problem files download here

Thanks.

I will try those programmes.

I either have a failing disk, or more likely the disk controller

and this may be causing the problems.

The pc goes to the shop today.
