BANGKOK, Aug 23 -- Candidates application for members of the National Reform Council (NRC) on the 10th day Saturday in Bangkok remained sluggish with only 20 applicants applying for candidacy this morning, Election Commission (EC) officials said.

So far only 1,837 applicants have submitted their applications to the EC office in Bangkok.

The EC has projected that more than 3,000 persons would apply by the end of the submission period, which falls on September 2.

Officials said the EC will, after closure of submitting the application, forward all the candidate names to 11 committee groups so that they could nominate qualified persons.

Afterwards, the National Council for Peace and Order will choose a maximum of 250 persons to serve as NRC members and their names will be sent for royal endorsement.

The entire procedure is expected to be completed within 50 days.

Meanwhile, Panadda Diskul, permanent secretary for the Prime Minister’s Office, inspected renovation work on the Government House building to ensure that newly elected prime minister Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha would be able to start his work immediately after royal endorsement.

Mr Panadda told journalists that he personally believed Gen Prayuth would begin his work at the Government House after the formation of his cabinet, which would take some time. (MCOT online news)

Perhaps many people fear about having to be transparent on assets and income, perhaps many think it will be military only that decides on things, perhaps many fear retalliation from red shirt people.

At times it seems Thai rather have someone just tell them what to do.

Maybe it's time for the General to order some of the military officers to sign up to fill the gaps in nominations. Of course the number of members in the NRC is really arbitrary isn't it as it's the NCPO that decides its structure. If nominations fell short by, say 50, the NCPO can simply reduce the membership by 50 and, lo and behold, you have a fully staffed NRC.

Of course the red shirts caused this problem. It has nothing to do with being set up as a robot to spew whatever they are told to spew, it has nothing to do with fake policies and faker votes, and it certainly has nothing to do with democracy being stifled.

It's another Thaksin ploy, obviously.

Perhaps General Prayuth will open 50 positions for concerned farangs.tongue.png

It certainly wouldn't do any harm, provided none of the naysayers and negative posters who like to criticise every statement made by the new PM just for the sake of criticising and to fill in their day stay well away.

But don't worry, it's not likely to happen.
