Concern that cronies will gain more from ‘low cost’ housing projects

Myanma Sedana Myothit Public Company will undertake a new housing project on 30,000 acres of land in Kyimyindine, Seikkyi Kanaungto and Twantay townships, Yangon mayor Hla Myint revealed, during the ninth session of Yangon Region Parliament on Friday.

The news was part of information that Hla Myint gave about the new housing plan, which the Yangon Region chief minister sent to parliament.

The city needed to be extended as the population grows, said the mayor, adding that the project would be undertaken between the Panhlaing River and Twantay Canal to the west of Yangon and between Hline River and Hlinethaya-Twantay Road.

The mayor said legal moves were underway to issue a notice about official land use as permission had been granted to use farmland in the project areas for long-term national interest, as stated under Section 29 of the Farmland Law.
