East, South warned of heavy rain till Aug 29

BANGKOK, 27 August 2014 (NNT) – The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) has cautioned residents in 15 provinces in the East and South of Thailand to beware of heavy rains and strong gusts for the next couple of days.

Citing a report from the Meteorological Department, DDPM Director-General Chatchai Promlert indicated that a low-pressure front is sweeping across Thailand while the southwest monsoon remains strong over the Andaman Sea, most parts of Thailand and the Gulf of Thailand.

Such circumstances are expected to result in torrential rains, gusty winds and turbulent seas in the eastern and southern regions from today until Friday.

Affected provinces in the East comprise Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat. Those in the South are Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Ranong, Phang Nga, Phuket, Krabi and Trang.

Local DDPM offices have been instructed to keep a 24-hour watch on weather conditions and prepare rescue teams and equipment in case of disasters.

Reservoirs and dams are being examined to ensure their integrity while natural tourist attractions have been told to close if there are chances visitors will be in danger.

We've had turbulent seas for 3 months at Ban Phe, Rayong but the last few days it has gone calm lol. We head the first heavy rain in ages last night and the sky looks fairly clear although there are thunderclouds off in the distance. It does look like the rainy season might finally kick in here and it is needed although the wife said her father is desperate for rain in Surin for his rice crop as it's dying off.
