I'm quite sure it's not 2G (year 1991 onwards) as it would mean that it has GMS-modem with dial-in internet. 2.5G included GPRS and 2.75G EDGE. Today's tablets came to the picture far later than that.

Generally it's up to the modem and hardware to what kind of networks the tablet can connect. Those are not upgradeable, unless you replace the physical hardware with another.

You might want to try to upgrade the firmware of the tablet and then use it with Wifi. Sometimes firmware upgrades will speed up the device enough to enable new features.

Or maybe you could use it to something else, like photo display on your table.

I start from the understanding you are talking about and Android Os device. If your tablet is really worth it about quality and efficiency of the software; you probably can add an USB dongle which will provide a G or at least .5G connection. Gnet ever had one; AIS and DTAC also provide such system. I bought mine 2 years ago for around 1900 baths; it might me less then a 1000 now.

the cheap Lenovo tablet A1000 is only 2g

Yeap, even through it accepts a 3G SIM card it will only access mobile networks at 2G speeds.

I've never known a 2G tablet either. Like oilinki says... extremely dated technology.

OP- can you let us know the brand and model number of your tablet? It would be useful to know what it is and see if there are any potential firmware upgrades.

Does your tablet have a SIM card installed?

If you have an android mobile with 3G you can use it as a wifi hotspot for your tablet. Of course having a 3g tablet with its own sim card is more convenient.

Settings -> networks (more) -> Tethering and hotspot

It is a 7" Air Pad with AIS SIM card an a SD memory card. I bougt it in Mach 2013 in a SMART store in Big C Lampang, now closed. I didn't have any idea was 2G. Was not connecting with the Internet from day one even by my home's wifi modem I use for my 3BB connection on my laptop. The store did some configurations, and was working with the AIS network in Big C, but never with any other. Even with a one year warranty the store didn't wat to fix or exchange. I paid 4500thb at that time. Cannot show video when connected with skype or LINE, even when is connected to the AIS network. The SIM card have also Internet. The connection is always very slow. Phone works well, but I do not use it. I bought it mainly to connect with the Internet when traveling. Only last week the technitian taking care of my laptop look at it and told me that it is a 2G, and not good for Internet connection.. He didn't mention if was possible to upgrade. If not, it was just a waste of money, no good even to gifted to kids.
