Mother Carrying Baby, Killed by Taxi on Zebra Crossing in Pathum Thani

A 34-year-old Laotian woman was killed and her five-month-old baby injured after they were struck by a taxi while crossing a pedestrian crossing on Lam Luk Ka Road on the night of 28 June. The incident occurred near Soi Lam Luk Ka 69, Lam Luk Ka District, Pathum Thani Province. Emergency services were alerted shortly before 22:00. Pol. Sub-Lt Ratchata Rattanajongjitkorn from Khu Khot Police Station, paramedics from Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital and rescue teams from Ruamkatanyu and Rom Sai Foundations rushed to the scene. The mother was found lying motionless on the road with severe head trauma. Despite efforts to resuscitate her, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her infant son was discovered nearby, injured and crying in distress. He was immediately transported to hospital for emergency treatment. The vehicle involved in the fatal crash was a yellow taxi bearing Bangkok registration plate. Eyewitnesses said the driver failed to stop and attempted to flee. A quick-thinking local resident pursued the taxi and managed to intercept it near Khlong 5, not far from an oil depot. The taxi had visible damage, including a cracked windscreen, from the impact by the victim and a broken left fender. The driver, later identified as Mr Amarin, was handed over to police. He claimed he had not seen the mother and child crossing the road. Pol. Lt. Col. Prasit Sombunjit, Deputy Inspector at Khu Khot Police Station, confirmed that the driver was tested for alcohol, but no alcohol was detected in his system. Nonetheless, police have charged him with two serious offences: 1. Reckless driving causing death 2. Failing to stop and provide assistance after a traffic accident, regardless of fault and not identifying himself to nearby officials. Mr Wiwat, 54, the woman’s employer, told reporters that she had been working legally at his roadside eatery for several months. “Every evening, after her shift, she would cross the zebra crossing with her child to get home. I heard the crash and ran out. It was devastating to find it was her,” he said. Local residents also confirmed she was crossing at a marked pedestrian crossing at the time of the collision. They condemned the driver for attempting to flee and praised the bystander who chased him down. The victim’s body has been taken to hospital, while her child remains under medical care. Picture courtesy of THai Rath In a significant drug bust, police at the Huai Rai X-ray checkpoint in Phrae have seized 10 million methamphetamine pills. The drugs were concealed within large speakers on a six-wheel lorry, en route to Lopburi. The driver, Mr. Khamwang Pratumchai from Maha Sarakham, claimed he was merely an employee tasked with delivering items from Wiang Sa, Nan. On 29th June, around 10 am, the detection occurred at the checkpoint in Huai Rai, Den Chai District. The police, led by Pol Lt Col Thathep Chotidechochai, conducted an X-ray examination of a truck with the registration number 70-4183 Maha Sarakham. The suspicious cargo prompted a search, revealing numerous large speakers tightly covered with tarpaulin. Inside the speakers, the authorities discovered sacks containing orange meth pills branded with 'WY'. A total of 1,000 bundles held 10,000 pills each, accumulating to 10 million pills in total. Mr. Pratumchai explained he worked for a transport company and was assigned to pick up large speakers in Wiang Sa for delivery to Lopburi. Following the discovery, Pol Maj Gen Thanarat Chumsaeng from Provincial Police Region 5 visited the site and instructed further investigation into the source in Wiang Sa, providing encouragement to the officers involved in this major bust. A devastating fire broke out in the early hours of 29 June, engulfing five homes and destroying ten vehicles in a narrow alleyway within Rong Fuean community, Bang Kaew Subdistrict, Mueang District, Samut Songkhram Province. Damages are estimated to exceed 10 million baht. The blaze was reported at around 01:00 to Mr. Kittichai Tanprasert, the chief of the Bang Kaew Subdistrict Administrative Organisation. Fire engines from the local authority and nearby districts, along with rescue teams from Sawang Benjatham and Sappharachen Foundations and the Provincial Disaster Response Unit, rushed to the scene. Due to the narrow lanes of the wooden residential community, firefighters had difficulty accessing the scene and had to pump water from the nearby Bang Kaew Canal to battle the flames. Local residents also desperately tried to douse the fire using buckets of water. It took firefighters approximately two hour to bring the blaze under control. By then, five houses were completely destroyed. Ten vehicles, including pickup trucks, cars and motorcycles, were reduced to charred remains. In a heartbreaking turn, a family pet, a dog trapped in a cage, perished despite efforts by officials to rescue and rush it to an animal hospital. It died en route. Mr. Sombat 57, owner of one of the destroyed houses, said his two-storey home, made of wood and concrete, housed eight family members. He recounted that his youngest daughter awoke in the night struggling to breathe. When she opened her eyes, she saw flames engulfing the upper floor and screamed for everyone to escape. “We heard popping noises non-stop, probably from short-circuiting or exploding appliances. Everything burned, my Isuzu D-Max pickup, a Toyota Yaris sedan and seven motorcycles,” he said. One of his grandchildren was forced to jump from the second floor, sustaining injuries. Another victim, Mrs. Patchara 62, said she was asleep with her husband and pet cat when she was jolted awake by loud noises. She grabbed the cat and escaped the burning house in time. Mr. Kittichai confirmed the initial cause is suspected to be an electrical short circuit. He also ordered emergency relief, including temporary shelter at Wat Bang Kaew, survival kits and is seeking financial assistance for victims.
