terdsak_12
Great looking cars, not to sure about the Wankel engines if Thai mechanics will be able to maintain it properly, bit pricey mind, 2++ million used 2003/4 million Baht. Personally for the same money I'd look at the Nissan 350Z.
smartecosse
"played" with one as the company car early last year when back in the UK. looks lovely, novelty doors, not as raw as the rx 7 was though so not quite as much fun. sti's etc much more fun but then you get the "boy racer" label

The Nissan also doesn't have a Wankel engine - no way would I pay 2 million baht for a car with an engine name like that, "Yeah, it's Wankel-powered!" Lorin
I have seen a brand new one of thes for sale..looks greatHas anyone any experiences with these cars? Great looking car, talked with Mazda dealers last time I been to Lumpini branch. The only problem is ###### expensive compared to other countries...3750000 baht for the new car, I think in EU or US this car never goes over 40K USD. The good thing they can break it for 6 years downpayment, so in the end you paying something like 60K baht per month.

Isn't the RX-8 one of those cars that has a really small engine - it's different configuration means it has something like a 1.8 litre engine, or am I thinking of some other Mazda? If it does have a smaller engine, wouldn't that affect the tax?

Nope, as its produces over 220bhp (250bhp)...this puts it in the highest tax bracket for engines (they're taxed on power and/or engine size) The RX-8 has new fancy twin rotor design too that apparantly won it the "Engine of the year award" in 2003

HowardJohnson
And the rotary engine is a gas guzzler. Something to bear in mind in these days of ever increasing fuel prices........

I suspect that if you can afford to buy a car such as this, then fuel consumption isn't something your going to worry about.

smartecosse
yeah but thats due in part to the power output achieved from the engine size not just because it a wankel engine
chaiyapoon
Mazda RX8,my favourite reasonably priced sportscar.Had a test drive 18 months ago was impressed. Great handling, fuel economy around 25mpg,and lively engine even in the under 200bp version.Good value in UK at around 22k.Has won sportscar of the year now several times.BUT buy one in Thailand and its going to cost you around 53K so I'll have to do without! ThaiPauly
I have seen a fe here brand new from specialist showrooms , ie the one at the top of Thong Lo, for around 3m ,yet the Mazda website states they start at 3.75 m. I wanted to test drive it and they said I could for a deposit of 100k! I said OK but when I return it I get the 100k back then? Oh No was the reply, you can put it towards another car!.OK so if I test drive another car then I can do that without paying any more....Oh no, 100k per car, so u can end up having 5 test drives for half a million baht..you gotta buy something!!! I walked away Wankels

Thaiboxer
Rortary engines supposedly last longer than regular piston engines due to their design. If a piston engine becomes worn, you can simply re-ring the pistons and seal off the cylinders but if you wear out a point or two on the triangular rotor, the exhaust/intake air will be mixed resulting in poor performance...not sure how easily that problem could be corrected. Hard to believe how expensive they are over here

nikster
It cost 3750000 at Mazda Lumpini, I visited there few weeks ago. The RX8 is lovely, and the wankel engine supposed to be very nice. The showstopper for me is that I get a Porsche 911 for that price in the US. A nice one at that. Price matters! I can get the RX8 for $25K or roughly BHT 1 million in the U.S. Ugh. BlackArtemis
It's under powered and has been recalled how many times now? As stated, I wouldn't trust a thai mechanic with a rotory...

Rdrokit
My old girlfriend has one. It spends more time in the shop then on the road. Many suspension problems. I drove the car many times, it is gutless, it needs a turbo to make it go.
