ricklev Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 I'm negotiating to rent a 55 square meter studio that needs the walls painted. Can someone give me an approximate cost of hiring someone to paint it assuming they supply the paint? It's white now and will likely just need one coat of white paint. The ceiling looks ok so I won't paint it. I will only be there a year or so, so a medium quality paint would be OK. I can either agree to take it as is or request that it's painted first. It's negotiable. About how many gallons (liters?) of paint are needed for the 55 square meters of walls.......? I'm in Bangkok. Thanks for your help!
TerryLH Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 "I can either agree to take it as is or request that it's painted first. It's negotiable." If it needs painting, isn't that a no brainer? The owner probably knows a handyman that you could contact.
ricklev Posted September 1, 2014 Author Posted September 1, 2014 No, the price per month is negotiable depending on if I take it as is or request some work to it first. Knowing the approximate cost of painting would be useful as I have no idea. I'm guessing maybe about 5000 baht but maybe that is way off....... Hey you, yeah you. If you are tempted to tell me what an idiot I am and what a stupid question I'm asking and that if I have to ask about such a small amount of money I should leave Thailand. Well go ahead.... It's my gift to you! Enjoy! And have a great day.
cheeryble Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Hi Ricklev Assuming minimal preparation……or small cracks being filled with the paint alone. A pair of guys can do that in a day (in fact a guy alone may do it in a good days work) So I'd allow maximum 3-4 man days labour and a couple of Thai "gallon" cans paint (possibly three if cover difficult) I think the paint's about 400/can, and only buy decent quality TOA or Dulux etc. If you ever do yourself the trick is don't roll fast. A good decorator looks like he's moving slowly….but he gets it right with no cleaning up spatter etc. Tip of the day: Those corrugated plastic art boards about 3ftx2ft make excellent drip mats use say three and they can be moved along as you go.

cheeryble Posted September 1, 2014 Posted September 1, 2014 Whoa I saw the meterage at the end of your post saying 55 sqm of walls. Now i notice (sorry bit late at night) it's 55sqm condo. You may have to up the costing a bit in proportion. You have about 130 sqm of wall including window and doors and kitchen/builtins which means perhaps 90sqm bare wall instead of 55.
ThaiSmarterThanYou Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Hello, Homepro has a service and it costs around 15000 for 30 sqm condo. It seems very difficult to find quality work for less, as nobody want to spend time just to paint. Any cheaper company to advice ? Thank you.

If you follow my budget guide i did for this guy on the chiang mai forum you see that his bijou residence would cost 2000bt diy and 4000 to pay through the nose.If hone pro quoted i dare say they ubderstood absolutely nothing of what you asked for. For the op at double the size i reckon 4k to diy to a good quality and then hiwever much you want to pay a man for a couple and half days. I have just costed out painting a two stirey house inside and out ibcluding soffits facias 17500 is my budget.....shouldnt be a problem.

Is there anyone daft enough around to pay this price, extortionate for no more than a days work.
WitawatWatawit Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Extortion is the currency of the local contractors when dealing with foreigners. I have had some very unpleasant experiences with them in recent times, and am still trying to get some work done, but I refuse to pay double and more what my neighbours have paid for similar work.
bankruatsteve Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 Painting is probably the easiest non-brainer thing that one can DIY. WHY pay somebody to screw it up. C'mon it's not that hard to do it right yourself.

C'mon it's not that hard to do it right yourself. It's worth paying a pro. He'll do it properly and won't screw it up so it will cost you less. He will get no more than a drop or two of paint on his hands the whole job. Trouble is organising a pro in Thailand. So yes do it yourself but learn a bit first I'm guessing you can look at YouTube it's easy to be stupid. Top tip: Wrap yr emulsion brushes or rollers in a plastic bag overnight and for gloss brush merely put in a pot of water for the night then flick and dab off the water next day.

C'mon it's not that hard to do it right yourself. having spent 30 years "doing it" let me know how you gloss paint a bare door??? OK Il tell you 1.sand lightly 120 grit 2 Vacuum down small round brush 3 wipe down with Tack rag to remove dust ( never seen tack rags here I bring from UK) 4 Prime then 5 repeat 123 use 240 grit 6 fill cracks holes 7 sand filler 8 repeat 123 9 undercoat 10 undercoat again 11 repeat 123 12 gloss 13 Thai gloss is pretty thin probably have to do twice doing 123 first Result door like glass. Walls, got to be clean non greasy are the easiest to do, fill cracks holes etc and sand down, cut in first not like the Thais, dont thin Thai paint its already thin enough, leave the aircon off it dries it too fast, unless walls are almost perfect to start with youll need two coats and youll have to work fast as it dries VERY fast here. Dont use glossy paint it will show every mark in the wall but up to you. Dont forget drop sheets ( unheard of in Thai) remove socket and light switch surrounds. Get a decent roller ( mine come from the Uk) How much?????????? how longs a piece of string, as its a rental and you will use Thais........very little, expect paint almost everywhere, curtains floor, doors , light switches., their idea of cutting in is badly applied masking tape. Every one I know is a "painter" well that and a " Builder".....havent seen a good one yet. PS Im not available for hire
