Discount coupons to be mailed to TV audience October 15



BANGKOK: -- The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) says the military junta has endorsed its plan to distribute 23 million coupons to 22.9 million households nationwide, beginning October 15.

The coupon, valued at 690 baht, will be used as discount to buy digital TV set-top boxes to turn receive digital broadcast in place of previous analogue broadcast.

The distribution plan will cost the country more than 16.2 billion baht.

NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith said Wednesday that the National Council for Peace and Order chief Gen Prayuth Chan-ocha has approved the distribution of the 690-baht coupons to 22.9 million families nationwide.

The reason was that the plan has undergone public hearings and was appropriately reviewed.

He said the NBTC would set up committees to select participating suppliers, print and distribute the coupons, and monitor project implementation.

The list of qualified set-top box suppliers will be announced Sept 15 with more added every 15 days afterwards.

In the primary stage, the discount coupons will be mailed to households in Bangkok, Nakhon Ratchasima, Chiang Mai, Songkhla, Rayong, Ubon Ratchathani, Surat Thani, Sing Buri, Khon Kaen, Udon Thani and Sukhothai beginning Oct 15.

People can use the coupons starting Oct 25 and 11.45 million houses will receive coupons by the end of this year.

If all coupons are used to purchase set-top boxes, the total value will cost the government 15.8 billion baht.

Printing will cost 65.25 million baht with coupon stickers and standard-certification costing 34.35 million baht each.

Postal services will cost 229 million baht, bank fees 12.6 million baht and project management and examination 70 million baht.
