Buttocks and Digging

I am sitting in an Amazon cafe, on the road into Phuket. I was here two days ago, too. Bought a coffee. The password for the WiFi was on the customer side of the espresso machine in big letters.

For all customers.

I had stopped ten minutes earlier at the Banporn Amazon, coming off of Phuket. I had ordered a coffee, and as the girl rang it up and took my money, since it was not posted anywhere, I asked for the WiFi password.

The look on her face was a cross of confusion and fear. The other girl, making my latte, looked up and gave me a weak smile. The cashier told someone out of my view that a "farang" wanted the password. A young woman stepped into view and stated I needed a Thai ID to get password.

Now, guys, I did not get my nickname years ago because I am easily excitable. I am always polite, and smiling, even when someone is being rude to me.

So, patient and smiling, I said that I'd been to many Amazons and never told this. That I'd been to the Amazon just up the road (where I am now) called Jomtong Amazon, and the password is in plain sight. Nonetheless, I said I lived here and had a Thai ID.

Then the story changes. She now says I must be Thai with a Thai ID.

I pick my battles. I smiled back at the girl making my drink, and said, please stop, I'll go to the other Amazon, I need to use the Wi-Fi. The cashier returned my money. Both smiled, but in a way that the "manager" could not see them do so. Still smiling, I said thank you.

As I stepped out the door, I heard the manager's voice, speaking in English.

She used the single, two syllable word, that combines two other words: the first is vulgar slang for the buttocks, the second is something you dig yourself into with the Amazon home office, when you treat customers poorly, with prejudice, and foul language.

Has anyone else been told by Amazon staff, anywhere in Thailand, that only Thai customers get free Wi-Fi?

Prejudice/ignorance/anger/cursing all in one package - great management material ////// face lost by mention of the other Amazon but the person you ran into was purposely being a turd......

You voted with your $$$$ and ability to walk out - good job......

Despite the backstabbing words you did the right thing......you're spending "Thai" money - that's usually all the "Thai" ID most Thai vendors need.....

Let us know the location so TVF can boycott.....

Contact Amazon head office might be an option too......ask about the policy and give the location.....

She called you a booty clash?

Top marks to Amazon I'd go there if I drank coffee.

It's to keep the Digital Nomads from setting up camp there.

Nice to see a Thai swearing in English, are we entering a New Age of Enlightenment?

Not sure how you get that from the op. My take away is the op encountered a rude racist thai who with any luck will lose her job for being such an ass.

No idea what you're on about? Was their password a rude English word that they were too embarrassed to reveal? I can't imagine it would be due to any discrimination, at least not if you're a white man.

You need a Thai ID to get password. Possible translation: Our wi-fi isn't working.

Buttocks ... now that's a headline that grabs you.

Complain to PTT Plc, which owns Am Coffee. One of their senior vice presidents said last year - Stores will be modernised to target upscale customers who come to the cafe not just for a drink but to use the internet, read or meet with friends.

But maybe you failed to meet the upscale customer requirement. In other words, you're a peasant and should not have been in the shop in the first place.

The other day used the free wifi in Maccas. In order to get 45-minutes worth an online registration form had to be completed, which required a passport or ID number.

No skin off her arse just to give him the password if it was working.

Xenophobic Thais don't exist. Sure thing, mate.

Oh well, as an English speaking Thai coffee shop manager once said, shit happens.

This would never have happened in the Ban Mai Sok Som Kob community health centre btw. No password needed ever.

OK, I get it now. Excuse me for taking your comments seriously. Won't happen again!

Dont worry John Ill make sure I never go in there after your report, I think we all know who the ar**holes are. the same "master race" who think they are superior, well done for going elsewhere although personally I would have complained to head office in writing stating I will stay away from all Amazons.

From Casablanca. Rick - Humphrey Bogart:

Rick: Your cash is good at the bar.
German Banker: What! Do you know who I am?
Rick: I do. You're lucky the bar is open to you.
German: This is outrageous. I shall report it to the Angriff!

BTW it seems most Amazon Cafes are franchise operations.

What's up with the cats head?

Had a simular situation with Amazon in a gas station going to Krabi in August. Ordered a latte and paid and stood there waiting for ages as other Thais coming through the door being served and my son went to the counter after 20 minutes and asked for my coffee .The girls said I never ordered a coffee , then my son showed the reciept and demanded a refund . that' s when I lost my cool and told them about their bad service and was walking out . Then I hear the girl call out Falung Heeaah .

Never will I use Amazon again..

The best friend of my GF works with PTT on environmental solutions.

Rest assured Amazon will here about this. If they are franchises, I don't see where that would make a difference. But TIT.

The location, as mentioned, is the Banporn Amazon. It's on the west side of Hwy. 402, about a klick south of a big Tesco, and the Talang Hospital Road, on the opposite side.

Even got photos of the exterior. I'll email Amazon corporate tomorrow and include a link to this thread.

My sister went through surgery. I was checking in. I didn't really even want the coffee. Even though I already had the password for the other Amazon, I still bought coffee.

No. That would be when one buttock is plaid, and the other stripes.

Who the hell let THAT slip through. Godddammit. We'd better lay low for a while, boys, in case it's noticed. Don't draw any more attention to yourselves than necessary. Got it?

Maybe their quizzical looks was because they couldn't believe you didn't have an iPhone?

Op, how about investing 1000 baht into the situation?

Go to a place that prints up banners.

Have two small ones printed up that say 'Free Coffee & Cake. Today Only' with the address of the cofffe shop.

Place them within walking distance of said coffee shop
