Dental Xrays

Featured Replies

In for my six month check and cleaning, Dentist wanted an Xray. Even though my teeth appeared to be in good shape, it may have been a year since my last dental Xray so I thought, 'why not? go for it.'

But then for some reason the first scan was inconclusive, not clear, or only a partial scan - so I was told. I had seen the image on the monitor and it all looked clear, but evidently not clear enough for the talking lab coat. (please take no offense)

I was then asked to sit for another Xray, but somewhere in my Gin compromised memory I recalled that too many Xrays in a year, or added up in a lifetime were a bad thing, so I politely objected and declined. I was then looked upon like I sprouted a second head.

So what's the latest consensus? Should one avoid being zapped too often, or did I make a little something out of nothing?

The modern XRay use much less radiation than the old one.

But my (expensive) dentist takes an XRay every 4 years if everything looks fine and there are no problems at all.

She wasn't even unsure if that is necessary, but due to some parts were problematic in the past she told it would give some information if everything remains the same.

And everything was exactly the same.

Speaking of X-rays, remember this machine from long years ago? Two views, one for you, the other for your Mom, and a pointer to move around. This was used to see how your shoes fit. Seems like most U.S. shoe stores had them available.

Happily, long gone now as a result of the finding that too many X-rays weren't good for you.

Must be very long ago.....My mother remembers to have seen one as child...she is now 70. She told it was very amazing for her and most other kids, they loved it laugh.png

Last seen in the 70's and most were retired in the early 1950's as word was officially provided of there danger. I recall using one time in the early 50's and never again. First US state to actually ban was Penn in 1957 per Waki.

Dental x-ray machines give much less radiation than x-ray machines for other parts of the body. Not sure if it is scientifically proven but one doc once told me you need to get zapped like thousand times in a row to start getting harmed by dental x-ray machines ( Intraoral type) because then the amount of radiation retained in your body will be too high and there is not enough time for your body to get rid of it.

Well if they make the complete X Ray you have a perfect picture of your head, I could even see my brain which to my surprise even fills all my head.....

So technically an XRay is an XRay, maybe they have a bit lower powered one for that purpose but I doubt the machine would be different if they XRay a broken bone in the face.

On Radiation there is no safe dose.....(if we ignore huge doses) it damage the DNA which is than repaired again by the body. With every damage there is the risk of a mutation because of wrong repair and in an unlucky case it can develop cancer.

Just the doses are small and the body can handle it well (there are a lot natural sources of radiation as well)....

So it should be avoided but there is no need for panic.....
