Thai jet bumps into French plane at Madrid Airport

MADRID: -- A Thai Airways jumbo jet taxiing to a runway bumped into an empty Air France plane parked outside a terminal at Madrid's international airport on Saturday, an airport official said. No injuries were reported.

The Thai Airways plane, a Boeing 747-400, was carrying more than 300 passengers and was headed to Bangkok via Rome, an airport spokeswoman said on customary condition of anonymity. The jet's right wing clipped the tail section of the Air France plane, which had been scheduled to fly to the French city of Bordeaux later Saturday, she said.

No passengers were injured or needed medical assistance, she said.

The cause of the accident was under investigation.

Both planes were taken out of service for repair while the passengers had to wait for another plane to continue their journey, she said.

Neither Thai Airways nor Air France were available for comment.

At least he was on the ground!

Is the hardtop at Madrid airport similar to a car park at Tops or what? One would think that there is enough space to move whacking great jumbos around without the risk of getting anywhere near 'nudging' another plane....

:o Many, many years ago I was waiting at the gate in BKK for a Thai flight to Europe....when a truck hit one of the wings of the aircraft...

Result: 8 hours delay, waiting for another plane (coming from Tokyo) :D

What is this with Thai drivers/pilots? :D

After the incident the pilot refused to fly the plane as it may have been damaged.... It took Thai over two hours to find another pilot.

:o Oh the old ones are always the best!

Get them to fix up wing mirrors or Thai pilots just couldn’t follow the lines drawn or illegal parking of the other plane. Where are the traffic police? Gone drinking!

Update:

Ill-fated THAI flight to arrive Bangkok after Spanish incident

BANGKOK: -- A Thai Airways International (THAI) plane which accidentally collided on Saturday with a parked aircraft belonging to Air France at Spain's Madrid airport will arrive at Don Muang International Airport Sunday evening.

Flying Officer Surapol Isarangkul Na Ayutthaya, director of the THAI Crisis Management and Operations Centre, said the pre-takeoff accident occurred as a THAI Boeing 747-400 with 240 passengers was taxiing on a runway at Madrid airport, about to depart for Bangkok, when its right wingtip struck the wing of a stationary Fokker aircraft belonging to the French national carrier.

Aviation authorities are conducting an investigation into the accident.

There were no casualties in the incident, but some of the 240 passengers deplaned and continued their journey with other airlines, according to a THAI statement.

Repairs on the THAI aircraft were completed and the flight is due to arrive at Bangkok's Don Muang International Airport at 6pm today, according to Flying Officer Surapol.

Hi

Ground collisions are quite frequent in this day and age, with aircraft getting larger and more of them, it can only get worse when the new Airbus 380 arrives on the scene.

Aircraft are also regularly damaged by baggage handling and ramp service vehicles, however the one to avoid at all costs is a collision with the "honey wagon" after it has just emptied the toilets :o
