Chained Phuket 'village crazy man', 37, sent to psychiatric ward

PHUKET: Kusoldham rescue workers yesterday responded to a distress call from a man at rubber farm in Thalang, seeking assistance for his mentally-disturbed sibling.

Upon arriving to the scene in Moo 8 of the Sisunthon sub-district, the rescue team numbering 10 met Anurak or “Tawan”, 28, who introduced them to his elder brother, Mr Prawit, 37, who was restricted to the confines of the roughly 4x5 metre ground level section of the elevated orchard house.

Restricting the 37-year-old man was a padlocked chain attached to his ankle and a post. On a wooden bed-counter, there were dishes and bottles.

Tawan explained that of five siblings, three, including Prawit, had suffered from mental health sickness for some time.

And although the two other siblings had already been successfully treated, Prawit remained ill, and regularly suffered from mental outbreaks off and on for the past 20 years.

Tawan said that “outbreaks” began in the year before Prawit graduated from Phuket technical school decades ago, and were unpredictable and uncontrollable.

Lately, he had become a menace in the neighborhood, wandering around, scratching and disassembling villagers cars and motorbikes.

So the family decided to chain him to the house, while contemplating what they should do.

Finally they decided to call Kusoldham. Prawit was responsive, and seemed to be normal.

Nonetheless, Prawit was escorted to the psychiatric ward of Wachira Hospital for initial examination before he will be be sent to another specialist psychiatric facility.

This is very sad story, but what is it that makes it worth reporting in the newspaper? That people are so desperate that they have no choice but to chain up their brother/son? That the family was cruel enough to chain him up?

Very sad story, of a man, that needs treatment and medication to help with his condition. A worthy story to get out there, as it puts the spotlight on conditions that some disabled people may be enduring.

Reminds me of similar situation of Indonesian man, I think in Bali, a few years ago. The man there was chained, and with intervention and medicine was able to intergrate back into his community.

I worked in disabilities for over a year some years ago. A lot of the clients had psych issues. It was one of the most humbling jobs I have ever done, with many of the clients showing me sides of myself that I never new were there. Part of the education platform should be that some part of the assessment be that time is spent with helping in the disability fields.

Exposing inhumane treatment of those with mental disorders is not a bad thing IMO. The media has been instrumental in changing how mental illness patients are taken care of.

I don't need to 'Google' it. I have personal experience of it (not for myself, may I add ), but this really isn't 'news' here. I've seen an old guy with Altzheimers' chained in exactly the same way. Only he was buck nekid. The family were wealthy too ...
