Thai gold and silver?

Featured Replies

The standard purity for Thai gold is 96.5%, is silver the same? and can it be refined to 99.9 ? by REPUTABLE gold smith? and how can testing be done?

The worldwide standard of sterling sliver is .925 or 92.5% silver and 7.5 % copper as the copper is needed to strengthen the silver for the production of jewelry etc.

Fine silver is 99% pure but is very soft and easily scratched.

The easiest way to test if gold/silver is pure is by using a rare earth magnet as Precious metals are not magnetic.

Also you can buy acid tests online to test purity.

And of course these medals can be refined to 99% pure with the right knowledge.

the Big question is why go through all the trouble, soft gold will rub away in time

and how can testing be done?

It's very difficult to match the color, surface hardness, density, chemical and nuclear properties of gold perfectly, but most jewelry is too small for the human hand to accurately judge density. There are some chemical tests you can do but unless you're a chemist, you're probably unqualified to analyze the results. Best to find an established, reputable dealer who can do the analysis (without damaging your jewelry).

Thai gold is traded in both 96.5 and 99.999 as bullion. For jewelry its generally 96.5. Thai silver jewelry is sterling 92.5, you can buy silver shot at 99.99.
