Low cost IDD prefixes 009, 008, 007 etc. Not all work with all lines or mobile providers.

009 seems cheapest.

The absolute cheapest calls are via Skype or one of its work-alikes. Skype is 1.5 Eurocents per minute to a landline in the civilised world. There are some outfits offering free calls to Uk landlines, but they seem to come and go with the weather.

Skype are now offering "incoming" call numbers for a number of European destinations. You can have a UK landline number linked to your skype account. People in the UK can then just ring the UK number and get through to you. This would also be a great option for anyone working (perhaps in an online business) in Thailand, who needed to maintain a European presence.

Hands On: Gizmo Lets You Call The World For Free

Thursday, July 20, 2006, 01:48 PM (PST)

So you've probably heard of Skype, the VoIP (voice over Internet Protocol) software that until the end of the year, is enabling US and Canadian residents to make free calls from their Internet-connected PC to landlines in those two areas.

Now SIPphone, the Internet phone software company behind the competing Gizmo Project, is offering free Internet phone calls to landlines in 60 countries, and mobile phones in 17.

The catch? As mentioned on the Gizmo Project Web site, there are restrictions. "The All Calls Free plan applies when both call participants are registered and active Gizmo Project users. A person is considered active when they are making phone calls with Gizmo Project on a regular basis. We reserve the right to limit call length."

Initial Impressions

In my tests throughout today I initially thought I was freely able to call several friends who aren't registered with the service. However, I was actually eating into my introductory call out credits.

As mentioned in our news story this morning, Gizmo has similar features to Skype, including free PC-to-PC conversations, ability to rent a US number to receive calls on your computer, and the option of paying low charges to call regions outside of the free zones. Click here to view the SkypeOut service costs and here to view the Gizmo call out rates.

On average, my test calls to a few US mobile phones and a landline in Australia took about 10-20 seconds to connect and through the Plantronics microphone headset used in my informal tests, call quality was usually, but not always, quite solid.

For instance, my buddy back in Australia (who uses Skype when he travels but spoke to me using a landline), advised that he pretty much heard no latency, echo or overt amount of noise. He did mention that the signal sounded like it had a slight amount of gain (distortion) and that overall, it sounded like I was using a cordless telephone. The experience on my end was similar.

The Gizmo Project site has a list of which countries are free to call (to active, registered users) and links to Windows, Mac and Linux versions of the software.

Slightly off topic

Any body had any luck using skype on a pocket pc with edge?

Will it automatically pick a wireless network or Edge ind that order?

Thanks

crushdepth tried it about a year 18 months ago when EDGE was first available - he said the quality was good. search his blog at www.crushdepth.net and you should find his write up .

Some more info about gizmo - the client program for SIPphone.

CALL FREE TO THESE COUNTRIES

LANDLINES AND MOBILES

Thailand

http://www.gizmoproject.com/learnmore-allcallsfree.html

the only catch seems to be both people have to be signed up to gizmo and have their landline and or mobile registered to their profile and then you can call that number free via the gizmo VOIP SIP client program.

might be a small price to pay for free calls at the moment.

gizmo is available for windows , mac , linux and the nokia 770 handheld.

I have tried many services including Skype and Vonage But the best seems to be VOIP Discount.

You need a 10 Euro deposit with them then you have Free calls from England to Thai landlines AND Mobiles also Free Calls from Thailand to UK landlines.

You can use the normal USB Computer phone or you can click the Direct Call button and the server calls your phone first then connects you to the number you want! This means all you need is a phone, even a mobile will do in Thailand. The direct call service has a connection charge of 0.03 Euro, which comes off your deposit. Of course if you use headset and mike or USB phone then the calls are Free.

This service can also be used with a SIP phone. Details on how to connect a SIP phone to their server are on the web page:

Hi,

Agree with the last post entirely, that being said my preference for the VOIP is definitly www.voipstunt.com, ( a member of the finera group of companies offering this service, see the first url below) who are offering the same service the 10 Euro deposit, but have a few different countries you can make for free landline calls to, but in addition, you can make free calls to mobiles in Hong Kong, Singapore and China, the last time I used the service.

However if your really interested in this subject here are a few URL's which cover just about all aspects of VOIP. Good Luck
