ggt
considering applying the model to all resort islands in the Kingdom in a bid to make them safer for tourists. Got to love the direction this is going...Safe zones for tourists... So...if you get mugged...beaten down...or killed out of the safe zone...you will own part of the responsibility for your demise...you are tempting the criminal elements of society by daring to move about in the unsafe zones... heyexile
"The seven unidentified men have been barred from leaving the island, as verification of their DNA is under way, the source added." Wonder what's taking so long... They did it overnight for Montriwat, a brother of Koh Tao subdistrict village chief Voraphan Toovichien. Lack of Funding?? Jonathan Head quotes Pol Gen X providing that excuse. http://twitter.com/pakhead
Kiwisailor
I suppose they will just dust off the ideas of the think tank from a few years back that decided the provision of "watersports" at the Full Moon Parties would reduce alcohol consumption, drug taking and encourage tourists to have an early night. tomyumchai
they could always fence the bar and beach areas in with razor wire and have guards on the entrance gates like they do in jamacia. all the tourists have to do then is choose which side of the compound/party area they feel safest in. seriously tho, people are still booking rooms to go there.... Jonmarleesco
But they were killed walking back to the hotel, not at, or in the immediate vicinity of, a party.
KarenBravo
The place IS unsafe. The Thai male wants to see how a farang female (especially blonde) looks or performs. They probably hear snippets or see photos in mags such as 'Playboy, Penthouse, FHM, Hustler etc' and they want a slice of the action. Skin mags? Are you serious? You don't think they can access internet porn?
stephen terry
I don't think the perps are on the island anymore. What I do think is one of two scenarios: either a gang of migrant/offshore Thai workers who were opportunist robbers, or offspring of local inhabitants who, for whatever reason, sought revenge for some slight. In the latter case, it would have been more transparent if the police had forensically eliminated likely suspects first. They failed to do that, and are still failing, thereby opening themselves up to social media allegations of corruption, collusion, and incompetency. The police have in their possession DNA evidence, CCTV records, and hopefully by now, phone transcripts - none of which has narrowed the list of possible suspects, possibly owing to the collusion aspect. Unfortunately, these 'allegations' are 'actualities' throughout Thai society, so it is improbable that any reasonable person would think otherwise in this particular investigation. IMO, the PM should be seen to take steps to cleanse this situation, PDQ, at Koh Tao. The first scenario is plausible by the very fact that one piece of news never followed up by anyone was the revelation by a farang holidaymaker that two women tourists were allegedly robbed on the same murder beach, the night before. Why not? The coincidence is too extreme not to have been a lead. Again, the collusion actuality could be the reason. Someone didn't want the police to pursue this. So where does that lead us? Waiting on the PM? Or what?

gbswales
Their only goal should be to make the whole of Thailand safe for tourists - there should be no such thing as "no go" areas
AnotherOneAmerican
No need to waste the money, people can just come to Myanmar where none of this shit goes on - no Mafia threatening you, no police extortion, REAL smiles and perhaps the most friendly people on the planet. With that said I hope tourists do not <deleted> this place also like they did so many other places... Murders in Myanmar 15,000/year. Murders in Thailand 5,000/year. Thanks for the offer, I'm staying here.
emilymat
Visit 'Amazing Thailand but ensure...... You stay in the 'play pens' You avoid the locals. You don't use jet ski's You don't say anything that can offend the Junta Don't wear bikini's Avoid pick-pockets on Bhat buses Go to bed early Try and avoid driving anywhere Don't argue about anything, even if you feel you have been ripped off. Avoid standing on balconies late at night after a couple of drinks. Apart from that, have a lovely holiday ! Why would you want to go elsewhere?
JarekN
LOL good one, wanna find the statistics showing crime against tourists? Further, given how the Thai Police works, I would not be surprised if the actual number of murders was much higher due to the fact that there are so many unusual suicides... No need to waste the money, people can just come to Myanmar where none of this shit goes on - no Mafia threatening you, no police extortion, REAL smiles and perhaps the most friendly people on the planet. ttthailand
When are they going to understand that we farang are mad as hel1 about what happened at Koh Tao and we will not forget. Stop these stupid ideas and for once take some real action. The world is watching !
herb59
I can understand, that locals have enough from party people. same in Ibiza.
changsinghleo
Is it any wonder this has been thought up by someone with a name very similar to Corn Cob? She thinks tourists are that hard up to party? Not on that island, thank you! She needs to be informed of the meaning of sensitivity. Really, is there anyone out there interested in partying there? It would have to be the quietest, most boring party ever as there is nothing to celebrate there at this time! She should plan on her own one woman party but would most likely be a 'no show'. Ulic
What if I wear a "T" shirt that states that I am in a "designated safe party zone, no mafia, criminals, scam's allowed" I could be safe everywhere. They could call it the "Ko Tao, safe T-shirt model."
Keesters
Sounds a bit like "different toilets for different races" or "seats at the back of the bus for those of a different race". I thought we'd done away with all that but then comes along Thailand. What next...Farang only islands or separate airports, buses etc.
iReason
I have an idea. How about putting the local thugs in cages. Tourists will be safer and TAT could charge the falang to come observe them. There can be vendors selling food to feed them. It may open a whole new market... This cage could be entitled: "Local Man Mocks Brutal Murders on his Facebook Page" Edited October 1, 2014 by iReason
ParadiseLost
Very impressive group of party planners at that table. Tourists should be happy to flock to Thailand to put their lives in their hands. Any one can see that by this photo. I thought instantly of another top level meeting when I saw the OP photo :
